    Hello,

Just received some new RAM chips for my computer today( a Hel80), and installed them. But when I turn on my machine, all was working fine until suddenly my screen went white. Tried restarting the machine, but got the white screen right away now. Can hear the machine starting up normal, and going in to windows, just can't see anything. Been thinking it might be the cable which runs just over one of the ram chips. Found out it is for the graphics card. Planing on sending it back to get repaired, but just wanted to check here first if anyone has experienced something similar or knows if something else might be at fault. It's a pain sending it in and waiting for it to return :)
If there is something I've done while chaninging the RAM, I must say what a stupid place to have such a "delicate" cable, since changing RAM is something anyone should be able to do.

Hope someone has something wise to impart, but I know I'll probably just have to send it in for repair anyway. Just one last desperate hope :)

There should not be any cable going over the memory for anything, much less your graphics card.

Do you have the TV Tuner installed? That should be the only cable that should be even close to your memory.

Where did you buy it? I would recommend calling their tech support first for help.

Okay, well, there is a cable going out and in again in the open space right above the RAM chip at the "bottom" when you have it upside down. The tech people at www.multicom.no where I bought it (I'm in Norway) told me that is was for the screen and yes I agree it shouldn't be there.

I do have the TV-tuner installed yes, but if that was effectid it should't make my screen white should it?

I had a Kingston 1024 533MHZ DDR2 SODIMM installed, and swapped it for 2 Kingston 1024 667 MHZ DDR2 SODIMM. I tryed changing make to my "old" RAM, but still just a white screen.

Seems likely that if the cable is for my screen, I must have disturbed it enough for it to loose some contact. If it is not for my screen, then I have know idea. Should be a simple task really.

Yes, it should be fairly simple to trace that cable to see if it has pulled loose at either end, or if there is a crimp or break in it. You could do that yourself and you could be back in business within minutes.

Well, I don't really know that much about computers, and hardware, so if I would be able to do it myself I don't know. Meant Changing RAM should be a simple task. But the contact on one side is kind of flimsy, with a lot of small wires going into a white plastic contact with a piece of black tape over them. Sorry, bad description, but as I said I lack knowledge :)

But dose anyone have the same computer and a cable running along over the RAM chip and can tell me what it is for?

Take a look at the picture of the bottom with the covers off toward the bottom of the page at http://www.powernotebooks.com/specs/images/l8-15/

To the right of the memory there is the power Molex cable at the top corner, and the antenna leads coming from the bottom right with the piece of masking tape over them (since the TV Tuner is not installed in this picture). Then you can barely see a black wrapped cable set that is on the left of the memory.

When you follow the wires that are giving you trouble...where does each end go?

Well, don't know what is what is the problem I guess. But you said to the right. But the picture you linked to the cable I'm talking about is the black one on the left side in the RAM "room". I dont't know that it is the problem, but I just don't understand what else can have gone wrong.

I don't suppose their is any way you could provide us a picture of what you are seeing? Photo, or drawn (might work if you are halfway decent in paint :) ) would maybe help us figure out what is wrong.

Sounds to me like you have a cable that's come pretty out of place. Maybe it's causing a slight short...

Does moving the lid(the part with the LCD) have any impact on the screen? Open and close it slowly a few times and watch for changes. Things you might see are vertical colored stripes, flickering, on/off backlight..

was going to get a picture with my web camera, but couldn't find a driver for it to put it on my old DELL. But you can see the black wire in the on this page... http://www.powernotebooks.com/specs/images/l8-15/... where you see the bottom and all "lids" are open. Even though it is faint, it just crosses over the RAM all the way to the left there. But will try to get my web camera to work.....

It is sounding more like your video card cable, but please trace it to both ends and tell us where they end if you can. Then if you find that the end that goes to the left over to the video card has been pulled lose, you can try to reattach it, or just push it toward the video card and see if you get any screen action.

Out from the picture on the link, the cable comes from under and to the far right of the open lid with the fan and goes under the "arch between the to opening and attaches itself back to a card under the arch between the fan opening and the RAM opening. Right beside the "heat" pipe looking thing also undet thge arch. Okay, I know that was a bad explanation, but hope you know waht I mean. Can't se anythin loose, but there are a lot of small wires in this cable that are somewhat exposed where it reattaches itself, and these are only covered by black tape. So I was thinking perhaps one of these small wires was out of place. I can't see because of a lot of them bunched together.

Well, it sounds like the cable set going to your video card alright, and you may well have damaged it somehow when replacing the memory.

At this point I would suggest contacting your vendor for help.

Okay, thanks for clearing it up for me. Yeah, I have it packed and ready, just wanted to make sure before I sent it. I don't live well without a "fast" computer in the house :) The postalservice in Norway kind of suchs, so that alone can take up to 7-8 days.

I know...being without your computer makes one feel kind of naked.

The good news is they should be able to fix it up quickly and you will be back at it again shortly.
