I found the Quanta KN1-PM a couple days ago and it seems like a very good alternative to the Asus Z71V. Both are 15.4 widescreen and sport a 128 mb nvidia geforce 6600 go. They are very simillar, but from what I can see the differences are:
-wsxga+ on asus, wxga on quanta but wxsga+ version coming out
-sata supported on asus, only pata on quanta
-sdif plud on asus, not on quanta
-no sparkles on quanta <--- not sure about this one
-mxm video on quanta <--- whether or not this is a plus I don't know yet

For a lot of people, it seems sparkles is a deal breaker so I think the Quanta is really worth looking into. I know I'm going to consider it since a wxsga+ version is coming in August. Quanta is the world's largest and some consider it to be the best notebook ODM so its quality definately need not be questioned.

I found it at powernotebooks and ISTNC, link: http://istnc.com/store/products.php?cat=96

I got this info from stuff I've read so feel free to correct me.

Yeah, from what ISTNC says, the Quanta's screen is far better than the Z71V..

Also from measurements that were redone, the Quanta is also slightly thinner and lighter than the Asus.

the MXM thing is a bit moot right now since Nvidia hasn't released anything else that can be used, and we're not sure if they will either.

I also think that at the same specs, the Quanta might be slightly cheaper.

However one thing for the Asus Z71V is, there's tons of users with it, if you got a problem, you got alot of people who can help you out.

The other thing the Quanta KN1-C PM (PowerPro G 3:8) has is its optional model specific port replicator with Video, Audio, IEEE 1394, 2x USB 2.0, Parallel, Serial, 1Gb LAN, Power. It will allow you to plug all of your external peripherals, including an external monitor, into the port replicator and simply plug the port replicator into the laptop. This way when you come and go, you don't have to waste time, and wear and tear on the ports, plugging in and unplugging all of your peripherals.
