I am debating between the UX and MX models after considering many other thin and light notebooks. I have about $3000 to spend and don't need to purchase until early August [at the latest]. I need to be able to run CAD on the system, burn DVDs, surf the net wirelessly, and use Bluetooth and IR.
I like the small size of the UX but I'd like to have 2G of ram instead of 1.25G. Also the US doesn't come with a Supermulti DVD/CD burner/reader right now. If I could get those two things out of the UX I'd buy in an instant. In addition, I'd like to get the Intel 770 processor in any notebook I buy.
My problem with the MX is that it doesn't seem to have a card reader [SD, Memory stick, etc], which is pretty important to me.
In addition, I'm a little bothered by the lack of a DVI and S video output.
Help me decide what to do guys!
Also, I was considering a Sony S380 and the Fujitsu S70010D.

hey propedder,
I was in the same boat as you. I opted for the MX so i could go up to the 2Gigs of ram, which really comes in handy when i do my GIS stuff.
A card reader on the MX would have been nice, but the only media i really use is Comapct flash, so i just use a CF pc card adapter.
FYI. if you aren't purchasing until early August, i've heard that there's supposed to be a new release of a sonoma-based MX at some point.
Personally, I would opt for the MX or the S7010D. I tend to stay away from sony's after a nightmare i had with one of their thin-and-lights years ago. While the MX feels like a tank compared to the S7010, the S7010 does offer the option of the port replicator that wouuld give you your DVI connection []
If you're looking to go with sxga+ resolution (1400x1050), all i can say is that my MX has the best non-glare type screen i've seen. While the S7010 comes in sxga+ res too, i've heard that the colors seem a bit washed out.
good luck with your decision! -

sorry if i was ambiguous in my last post.
when i said it was built like a tank, i meant the MX feels ROCK solid. sturdy keyboard and extremely sturdy magnesium alloy casing. Granted, the MX is a bit heavier than the S7010, but it feels MUCH sturdier than the S7010.
Definitely drop Ivan an email if you want more specific information. He responds quickly and is very friendly. Always a pleasure dealing with Ivan!
Of course, if you want any user-based opinions, post away! []

Anyone else?

I have been using the MX for a few weeks now and have no regrets. It took me over 3 months of returning laptops for one reason or another. The MX is the most complete package I have had the opportunity to use. I had the opportunity to see the MX and Fujitsu S7010 side by side at Portable One and I was sold. The MX feel much sturdier.

has anyone else reported the so-called "heat" coming up the left-side of the keyboard? One of the reviews on this site mentinoned that...
also any updates on newer models scheduled to come out soon? -

We at P1 have been specializing in ultra portables for over 10 years, Toshiba ( we no longer offer), Fujitsu, Panasonic and other well designed slim line / ultra portable systems and there has always been a heat dissipation issue, system getting extremely hot (sometimes too hot to touch) or way too much fan noise, so when it was finally our turn to do one ourselves and the MX Series being our current flagship ultra portable, we did our best to bring the best of both worlds when it comes to excellent heat dissipation, via internal high exchange heat pipes, artic silver thermal compounds and optimal fan placement and settings to cool system while not being always on and to keep the fan extremely quiet. The MX is the all around best 5lb and under Pentium based ultra portable system out there currently for heat dissipation and minimal fan noise, so for slight heat rising from the heat pipes when system is on for hours thru the keyboard vents, obviously heat rises, instead of burning your lappy and getting too hot on the bottom or other areas of the system, we cannot ask for more with out adding more fan noise, which nobody wants fan noise

Does the MX come standard with a weight saving spacer module to replace the optical drive when traveling?

Any idea when this Sonoma-based MX will be available?
I am trying to decide whether to buy one now or wait.Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015
