    Hello everyone,

I own a somewhat older Compal/MySN HLB2 MG6. When it tries to boot (no matter if from the HDD or a Linux Live CD/DVD) it randomly crashes. No blue screen (when windows 7), it just goes to black and restarts immediately. It worked until a couple of weeks ago.

First I thought it could be the RAM, but after letting Memtest86+ do its thing (which interestingly enough worked without problems!) no error could be found.

I thought it might be the heat and renewed the thermal grease on all the components (have done so before successfully with other notebooks, so I think I know well what I am doing), but it didn't solve the problem.

Since Memtest86+ is running without problems, but the system crashes with every time it boots, I thought it might be the HDD. I took it out and booted from Linux-Live-CD which did not work either, the random crashes remained.

Now I don't know what to do. I can't see any visible damage on the mainboard and I'm irritated by Memtest running properly. What else could I check? I would love other hardware test utilities, but since I can't even get a rescue linux started...

Randomly means, every n-th time, or does it crash on every boot?

    How long did memtest run?

Maybe try with only one RAM slot, also remove HDD, and DVD, or all components you can remove with ease, then try the Linux Live System again. Also try to boot from different USB ports.

    Good luck
