Hey. Got my HEL80 a few days ago and everything is pretty much good about it, but the optical drive is SOOOOO loud. Its about 10x louder than any other part of the notebook (with the drive off its dead quiet, amazing). When I stick a DVD in and hear a scratching noise and a deafening whir, it kinda takes away from the experience.

I was a) curious if this is a general problem or I just got a bad drive b) does it have anything to do with the fact the drive is extremely flimsy c) would switching to a slot-load drive fix the issue?

Our ODD drive on our unit is the same way, gets louder than the entire machine :( Most likely the drive is ok, but you should consult with your dealer. I havent seen a slot loader that would work for this model yet.....has anyone else?

The whir is quite loud, though I think it's only when installing (and therefore running at full speeed). I don't really notice loudness when accessing CDs--as in while playing an already-installed game.

As far as the "scratching" sound, you might want to look into that.

What makes some ODDs work and others not? I don't plan on switching out my ODD for another but I was just curious
