Reinstalling Win XP on Averatec 3200

The computer is 6 y.o., still working, although slowly. The touch pad stopped working a year ago at which time I discovered I did not have the OS or a recovery CD.

    Questions:

Can a recovery CD for a desktop Compaq be used to reinstall the OS or must it be an Averatec disk or at least a laptop version of the Win XP OS?

If the Compaq disk can be used, what is needed in addition to the OS, such as the touch pad driver?

If an Averatec version of the OS must be used, where can I get it?

The real no. 1 question: do I have to reinstall the OS? I have tried to stop all unnecessary services and applications. May be I consider it slow because it is compared with a newer desktop. It only has 512MB RAM, 1GHz clock, 40GB drive. The processor is AMD Athlon XP-M.

    Thanks,

    Boris

Is the OS the original install on the orginal HD? If so, the HD should have a partition with system restore software. I have a restore CD but it is for the 3250. I doubt very seriously that the Compaq restore disk will work.
