I apologize up front as I know this was somewhat addressed in another thread, but no one has posted to that in some while.

I have heard a lot of owners remark about the "loud" dvd drive. Just curious if anyone has researched putting a different drive in. It should be just a matter of ensuring that it is a slimline drive with 50 pin atapi ide connection, right? I guess what I am asking is, when I finally get my HEL80, I could forseeably go out and get an alternate optical disk drive (such as these maybe http://www.bixnet.com/insldvcodr.html or http://www.meritline.com/pioneer-dvr-k04-atapi-slim-dvd-burner-laptop-drive.html), correct? Thanks for your time.

The only issue that I can think to warn you about is that while the drive may fit-the bezel may not line up quite right with the notebook. If the aesthetic issue is not a problem, you should have no trouble. I'd wait and see how the HEL80 performs before ordering any parts.

Laptop drives are usually louder than desktop drives.

The DVD-RW drive in my HGL30 is quite loud. Surprisingly loud in fact. I guess it's a tradeoff for the increased speed, but I've never heard another laptop drive like it. That slot loading drive looks cool.

Is it? I haven't had mine seem too loud at all. Check it with different discs, some discs are just balanced badly and vibrate at high speeds.

I haven't had problems with the drive being too noisy except for when it spins up to full speed, as during some installs. (Oblivion vibrated the table. heheh.)

This has been my observation as well.

It is not all the time, and/or with all disks as mentioned.

Is there any particular reason why you need to change the ODD? When it comes to notebooks, you have to make sure that everything is compatible. The brackets and dimensions need to match the system. Personally, I would just save myself the headache and stick with the one that comes with it. It would save some unnecessary expense as well.

The shop only offers drives without DVD-RAM-support. But I need RAM-support to use my backups dvds. And it is possible to buy the barebone without any drives, that's why I'd like to buy a drive with RAM-support.
So if normal slimline drives fit without any tray or tool it would be nice.

The optical drives for the most part are about 90% the same, but little adjustments to the mounting holes, connector locations... maybe chunks of plastic that were added / removed to make the drive fit "right".. could be the difference between a happy day and hunting for RMA numbers..

You might be able to get your reseller to omit the drive, and you can check around with other resellers for the right drive.
