Greetings everyone,
As a project, I'm working with a friend of mine who makes trophies for a living to laser etch a plate to go into the brand decal slot on my future IFL90. I'm about to start a job that will have me hotel hopping every couple of days for at least the next three months, and as it is it'll be a race to see if my laptop gets to me before I have to go. I'd really like to be able to give him dimensions to work with now so the plate will be ready to go when my laptop arrives.
Is there anyone out there with a Compal IFL90 or Sager 2090 and some dial calipers or a really sharp eye who would be kind enough to measure the height, width, and depth of the brand decal slot for me?
I can use measurements in either SAE or metric, but metric is preferable (and easier to get a good read on with a cheap ruler). If you're kind enough to do this for me, please be as accurate as you can. If it turns out well, I'll come back and post pictures.![]()
Thanks for your time.

I'd say it looks like 1.75" lengthwise and .75" tall, this is an approximate without a ruler since I can't find mine.
EDIT: Just caught you wanted Metric, so I'd say it's like 4.5cm and 1.5cm, eyeballing it. -
Thanks for the reply Syn, I appreciate you taking the time to check.
I spoke with my guy, and to get the fit I'm looking for he said I'd need to be accurate to about 0.5mm.
You've given me a place to start though, I can at least start working with those rough proportions.
Anyone else out there with a really sharp eye or good measuring tools that can get all three dimensions on that recess to about 0.5mm? -
So I happen to have one laying here at work. As accurate as I can get is:
45-46 mm x 15-16mm x just under 1 mm.
Hope that helps. I'm interested in getting something made for mine when I finally get it, so let me know. -
Many thanks Chuvak!
I think it'll be plenty safe to round it to 45x15mm, in which case you were dead on with your metric measurements Syn.And at just less than 1mm deep, he'll know which adhesive pad to use.
I'll come back with photos when we get things all set up.
Thanks again guys! -

heh, maybe you should offer them for sale on this forum. My decal slot is empty

So I'm wondering how this has worked out for. Any more info? Maybe some pics?

That's quite cool. Perhaphs you can, time permits, paste in the entire process as a guide for others? Or start selling them

Remove
* Grab a scrap piece of wax paper or label backing if you want to keep your old label.
* Pry up the old label with a fingernail, screwdriver, or whatever works. Doing so gently and carefully will preserve the double sided tape holding it in. Stick it to the wax paper to protect the tape from dirt/dust/supervillains.
Clean
* If there's label goo left over in the recess, clean it out with a little bit of solvent on a rag or paper towel. Anything will work with varying levels of ease, just don't go too harsh or you might mess up the sparkley paint job.
* If the plastic is light colored on the edges from machining, run a black marker around the inside of the recessed edge to darken it. I pried up my new label to do this because it really stood out.
Create
* Take the old label to a trophy/award or engraving shop and explain your idea. Mine is thin aluminum plate with black enamel, laser etched to show the metal, then covered with a protective clear layer. This is basic fare for a modern trophy maker as they use these types of materials and methods on plaques and nameplates all the time. They usually have a selection of fonts, and the capability to do images as well. For images, ask them for the DPI of their machine and what format they'd prefer you submit it in. With that information and a little google-fu you can give them exactly what they need to make your image look good.
Apply
* When it's all ready, peel the backing off and stick it on. It might take a couple tries to get it straight if it's a little small, but be careful not to wear the tape out re-trying.
You may note that this thread started with me asking dimensions in an attempt to jump start the process. I found it to be much better taking the label in for them to size. This gives them a standard to compare to, which is especially important for the rounded corners.
Hope that helps. Cheers! -
Does the Sager 2090 from PowerNotebooks already come with a label there, or is it blank like the one that's a straight-up Compal?

Sweet! For 3 bucks i will definitely have to check that out. Now I just have to think of what it should say..... Hmmm how about DELL?
-
But in white on black (to match the case and look OEM). -
