Does anyone know what the performance differences between these two Harddrives are?
I am going to be using my notebook for both video editing and games, but also require a lot of storage space, so both speed and capacity are important requirements. I was going to go for the 200GB 7200rpm HD based on the extra rpm, but then I remembered reading that some larger capacity 5400rpm drives can be as quick as smaller capacity 7200rpm drives, so just wondered how these two particular drive compared?

I dont have a comparison between these 2 hdds, but the samsung spinpoint M80s (5400 rpm) are as fast as Hitachi TRavelstar 7K100 (7200 rpm)
Seagate Momentus 7200.1 are the fastest, but quite small
best option would prolly be to get the faster (7200 rpm) and get a external usb harddisk -

Search the forums and you will find threads such as this. There's various relevant threads with some test results in the hardware forum if you look through.
You can also compare 250GB 5400 with 160GB 7200 at the Tom's Hardware charts.
However, if you are going to be doing video editing then you will get much better performance if you have an external HDD (preferably with eSATA or Firewire) and stream the video by reading from one HDD and writing to the other. Simultaneous read and write on the same HDD will reduce data throughput by more than half.

Thanks Sprint and John for your comments - much appreciated!
I had done a quick search on here but a lot seems to come down to the specific models in question and I hadn't been able to find a direct comparison of the two.
John, I didn't know you could read from one drive and write to an external drive like that - thanks for the tip.
I think I'll go for the 7200rpm version and suppliment it with external storage.
Thanks again.
