The model is SE-T084L. Details are here.

Note that this is an external burner. It's interesting that it will run on USB power, albeit at reduced speed. I don't see any sign of the bare drive suitable for installing into notebooks.

There some additional specs in the manual.

I read somewhere (forgot where) that it is a Toshiba Samsung Storage (TSS) made drive. I have looked too and was unable to find any detailed info.

Zepto told me that both the slot in and the normal Samsung DVD-RW they sell is the same drive with the same specs and only the loading mechanism is different. slot in or tray, everything else is the same.

I don't know for sure if we have used more than 1 model of Samsung drives. But the ones I have in front of me right now is SN-T082.
And yes, it is Designed by TSS (Toshiba Samsung Storage Technology)

That is not a Samsung drive. That is a Sony, the first of 2 Sony models we have used.

Ultima, it isn't on the drives we use. If you read closely the one we use is: "SN-T082" and the one with lightscribe is "SE-T084L"

Can someone confirm the make and model number of the drive zepto actually use now? Which one is on the youtube video, i dont like the noise that one makes but now ive heard it might be a sony one does the samsung one make less noise?

Does the slot in dvd read discs from start up, ie from bios, if you wanted to install windows?

    Does it read 8cm discs?

Is there a way of telling if there is a disc in the drive already without pressing the eject button, is there an indicator light on the drive?

Is the drive definetly black? Some of the models stated in here show grey/silver drives on google images.

    1. The optical drive can be set as the first boot device in the BIOS (this is the default).

    2. The ability to read 8cm discs is unclear. I think not, because I recently read that a new slot-in burner had been launched which can handle 8cm discs. For this reason, I ordered the burner with the tray (currently the SNS082H).

    3. There's no light showing disk in drive for the tray burner. Would the slot-in be different? The light on the tray flashes during reading, but then goes off.

Samsung's websites show the -082L burner has Lightscribe, but I am not sure this is correct.

I recommend that you stay away from the slot-in drives. I ordered a Znote 6625WD with a slot-in drive and it was very very noisy and it also turned out to be faulty. It damaged my windows vista disc and I was unable to install the OS. After contacting Zepto I was told that they were been having problems with the slot-in drives and that they would send me a normal tray drive and of course a copy of Vista.

"whorse" says the noise on the samsung is ok. Is it like that youtube vid of the zepto slot in drive?

I like the idea of it using less desktop space, not having to manually pull the tray out after ejecting, not having to place the disc onto the centre ring each time. I know these sound like petty reasons but i do a lot of cd / dvd work and day after day i think this would annoy me. But so would a loud noisy drive, so im still not sure.

Any optical drive can get noisy if it is have to look for data scattered all over a disc so the head has to keep moving around. A fairer test is the noise when reading sequential data such as playing a DVD. I've not seen inside a slot loading ODD to know if there is any inherent reason for the mechanism being noisier than a tray loading ODD.

However, a feature of the Zepto 6x24 design (I can't comment on the other models) is that the keyboard is directly resting on a metal housing containing the optical drive so there is nothing to dampen any noise from the optical drive. (This also applies to noise from the fan).

Perhaps there should be a thin layer of sound-proofing material fixed to the underside of the keyboard?

The problem with sound-proofing material would result in more heat generating inside the machines.

Heat dissipation should not be an issue with the 6024W but I agree that it is a consideration for the models with the more powerful GPUs.

We have used at least 3 different Slot-in drives. 2 Sony and one Samsung as far as I know:

Sony DW-Q78A: The first drive we used, have not been used in a long time. (This is the one on Youtube)

Sony AW-G630A: Second drive we used, only used for a shot period.

Samsung (TSST) SN-T082: This is the one we are currently using.

As far as I know, none of this drives supports 8cm discs.

Thanks for the info about the slot-in ODDs in use.

The one I would like is the - T084L which supports 8cm discs and has Lightscribe (for some reason this currently seems to be available only as an external unit).
