I've got a hel80 for about a year and a half with the glossy screen. I take it back and forth to school with me for taking notes/surfing the net (depending on how interesting the lecture is...) and i've always kept it in a big laptop bag for protection from the elements. Today once I got back from class and booted it up, everything that should be the color black, is now the color red. There are lots of red dots for any color gradient of black.

I used to have an old dell desktop computer that had a graphics card go bad which made my screen turn grey which lead me to wonder if its the graphics card (geForce Go 7600) and not the screen.

I've done some searches but can't really get a good search to isolate my problem, most results show dead pixels which this definitely isn't.

Thoughts as to what this problem is, and what to do about it? I definitely appreciate it.

Have you tried connecting the laptop to an external display to see what kind of results you would get?

Good call on the external display. That rules out the graphics card since the 2nd works as it should.

Do you think there is no fix other than new screen?

I would suggest re-seating the LCD cable. However, if the laptop is still under warranty you might want to call your reseller to make sure it will not void your warranty.

Let me know if you need instructions.

Thanks for your prompt replies. I will find about the warranty and repost about the re-seating the cable if that will be the route to take. I sincerely appreciate the help.

although i wouldn't consider it a permanent solution, playing with the display settings within the nvidia tab of display settings did make a world difference. It's much easier on the eyes and will definitely work as a temporary fix.
    Thanks for the idea pukemon.

Yeah it gets all funky from the moment the bios screen shows up.

Alright. I spoke with tech support. No voiding of warranty to reseat the cables. I got the disassembly guide and took the laptop apart. Is there anything more to "reseating" the cables other than unplugging and replugging the ones that are associated with the LCD?

SUCCESS! The LCD cable on the opposite side of the screen was skewed from the connection, and with an unplugging and replugging fully into the connection the screen is crystal clear and almost seems brighter than usual. (I reseated all cables associated with the LCD anyway, for good measure)

I wonder how long the cable may have been not fully connected... Either way I can't argue with these awesome results.

Thanks to all who posted in this thread.

    Great news for you.
And still your warranty is okay.
