    Hi all,

    I am in the planning phase of purchasing a lightweight laptop;
so far the only contestant is the Actius MM20.

I really don't need big screen, optical drive and such if the price
is right (~1500) and the weight is less than 4 lbs, with good
(more than 4 hours) battery performance.
    Suggestions welcome !!!!!!!

Now, the problem with the MM20 is the small capacity HD... for about
$200 a 80GB 2.5" HD could be installed in place of the standard 20 GB
    Travelstar.

My question is: is it possible to change the HD ? It is as simple, as
opening the case, unplugging the connector, unscrewing the caddy,
swap the drives, screws back in, plug connector, ta-da ! Right ?
(of course putting an OS on it is another question, but I plan to
put Slackware 9 on it, anyway.)

I think you'd be making a bad decision going with Sharp. Your budget makes upgrades tight, but you could look at the Fujistu S6210 instead. They start at $1500 from www.laptopsinc.com

As for the HDD upgrade, it's not hard. It's just a bit of a pin to get everything installed.

    Brian,

The MM20 is no longer being considered, instead the Fujitsu
S6210 or _maybe_ an Averatec 3225 (cheap!)... but I feel strongly
about the S6210, probably the way to go.

I read an interesting article on the Transmeta Efficeon
speed-throttling and found it slightly disturbing...I had no idea.
This made me change my mind about the MM20.

Brian - why do you believe the Actius MM20 is not a good choice. I am looking for an ultralight under 2 pounds with a good screen readable outdoors. Other considerations are: Firewire port on the notebook would be good to communicate directly with the camera. More memory and hard disk space the better. Processing speed is not so important. So far my choices are U50/70 (if it was a US model decision would be made), X505, and mm20. Also any idea if the X505 hard drive can be upgraded?

Big, your question goes beyond Sharp, please repost in the Hardware forum.

Anyway, I wouldn't buy a Shaarp computer. It's not a core busines for them and I think you'll find much better quality in the other models you listed.

Brian-New one here. Looks like you are up with the chickens.
any users/owners of Sharp Actius RD10 I could share notes with?
As you said, Sharp has a very small slice of the Pie. Appreciate any comments or links.
