    Should I be worried?

I have a 2 year old BENQ Joybook 6000N which recently has started the fan running constantly. I understand that being in Australia and it being summer the temperature can be kinda warm but I am a little concerned regardless.

The laptop boots up without any problems, the fan kicks in intermittently as it should (though like most BENQ laptops the fan is very loud for a laptop fan) but after about 5 minutes of it started up, the fan will begin to run constantly for the duration of the laptop being turned on.

My PFU never goes above 1/3 of its capacity, tending to sit at roughly 400 on average running my regular programs and my CPU hovers around the 5% mark.

The laptop doesn't get really hot per se, but it does warm up considerably - I've read in other places that this is common for BENQ laptops, that they do operate warmer than other laptops and the fans are pretty noisy, but I'm wondering if I should be worried that my laptop is potentially headed for a meltdown and if so, what can I do to help try and stop it?

Might want to clean out the vents to ensure proper airflow. Running in low power mode if you can will help with the fan noise as well.

    cleaning is a good idea.

did the high fan speed co-incide with a loss of battery life? if so, then something is using more power than before, if not it's the fan or the temp sensor.

since you also report that the notebook gets hotter than before you probably have something on your system consuming more CPU than before... 5% is not much but do check task manager's graph as well to see if its on consistently and check which process is using a lot of CPU. I don't know this model - if it has a dedicated graphics card, that may also cause more power. Or its the windows USB bug or something else you installed which uses more CPU than it should, some background process or driver...

Thanks for the replies guys :)

I don't actually use the battery itself on it's own to power the laptop, I only ever have the laptop plugged in and running through AC power so I can't really say if the fan coincided with a battery power problem tbh - I've been trying to track down a can of compressed air to clean out the vents with, but it's proving a little difficult to track down in my area lol.

ZaZ - what can I do to make the laptop consume less power and run in a lower power mode?

orthorim - can you elaborate on this windows USB bug? I haven't come across that before...

One thing I have noticed is that since firefox did its latest update it is very sluggish to load up when I first open it, taking about 30 seconds or more to open up the window - which makes me wonder if it could be causing a bit of a strain on my laptop...

TMPROXY.EXE, a service of my Trend Micro Anti-Virus is my biggest memory user, running constantly at 40k o_O

You can use Notebook Hardware Control.
