I have a limited budget and this is at the high end of it. I want a nice looking laptop with the power to run graphics design programs efficiently (like photoshop, illustrator, quark, etc.) and a long battery life (for sure over 2 hours, preferably over 3). I also want to be able to watch DVDs on it. It doesn't need to be able to play games.
Here's the link: http://www.staples.ca/ENG/Catalog/cat_sku.asp?CatIds=89%2C90%2C91,454&webid=581092&affixedcode=WW
I want to know if it can keep up with the applications I want to run. I also want to know how long the battery will last and if I am better off getting an eMachine. A DVD burner and a card-reader would also be nice.
I live in Canada so keep the exchange rate and shipping issues in mind when you make suggestions.
Thanks.

The 6130 is a nice machine but it doesn't offer a DVD burner and won't make your 3 hour battery life goal. However it does offer great performance/dollar.

I bought the 6130Hs with the burner. It's a very nice machine with an enourmous bright screen, though it's a little heavy and runs hot after extended use (like 8 hours). The battery doesn't last longer than 1.5 hours and the internal wifi card is weak, but since I needed a very fast processor and wanted to start doing video editing and burning to dvd I thought I could live with that. Eventually I may make this my desktop machine and get another mobile processor machine made specifically with long battery life and strong built-in wifi. In the mean time, I will get another back-up battery, and just purchased an orinoco pcmcia a/b/g card with external antennae. While I'm sitting I should be able to reach all networks in a quarter mile radius!

Why dont u get the 3220H, the processor is pretty good. most important is is ultra cheap. I got mine for 1099 from futureshop, with a free wireless router and 48 payment plans. It is amazing. And you can order and dvd rw from ultra drive at 108 dollars i believe. It is good. more than enough to do your applications. It laste 2.5 - 3 hours for sure. So i say it would be a better choice for u.

Run, don't walk to your nearest Averatec dealer and get yourself the 6130HS w/DVD burner (standard configuration). This is a gorgeous machine. And while not a household word - yet, Averatec just may be the next 'Samsung' of notebook computers. I recently was in the market for a new, larger format notebook, and did a lot of research, and looked at many of the name brand puters - like Compaq, Toshiba, Dell, Gateway, HP and others.
In my opinion, feature for feature, you just can't beat the Averatec - especially for the price. If you need a desktop replacement, or just want a large, powerful notebook for the road, this is the one. The 15.4 wide-screen format is absolutely gorgeous. One critical feature for me was a notebook with a 1280 x 800 resolution (WXGA), and it had to be bright. The Averatec fit the bill. I really wanted an 80gig hard drive, but for the money, the 6130 model includes a 60gig. All the standard ports including S-video out for TV viewing (although I haven't tried it yet). It even includes a legacy parallel port and one Firewire port. 3 - USB 2.0 ports are standard. The video includes the mobile Radeon 9600 with 64meg of dedicated memory. Built-in wifi 802.11g is also standard.
Until I actually say the Averatec, I was a little skeptical of the machine, thinking that for $1400 dollars the construction would have been less than expected, perhaps even on the flimsy side. I can now honestly say the 6130HS is one beautiful machine, both in physical appearance, build quality that is solid, and overall 'fit n' finish' aspects. It is big, and it is heavy, but since I use a roll-along computer case while traveling, this was not an issue for me. The ac-adpater is the largest I've ever owned, but with all the hardware in this machine I guess it was warranted from a design standpoint.
I've only had mine a few days, but I am a very happy owner indeed with this machine, performance, looks, screen and everything else.
Here's the best part... If you're a member of Sam's Club, you can pick the 6130HS model up for $1,248. Arguably, one of the best deals going for a machine of this caliber. I think this machine is a sleeper, and that Averatec is a company that wanted to be taken seriously, for building a high-quality, hi-power machine at an incredibly low price.
Check it out.

When I seen the Averatec name, I was very skeptical. I had never heard of Averatec before. So since this was going to be my first laptop purchase I did my research about them. After reading forums (a lot of great review on the 6130 model) and actually being able to play with one at Sams club. I decided to buy the 6130 model, I am impressed. For the price ($1248) I was expecting a cheap laptop when I first started looking. But I feel that I have got the best bang for the buck. I am impressed with this machine. The only complaint that I have (and read about) is the volume should be independent, instead of having to use the FN keys. But other than that, this is a great buy. I recommend this brand to anyone looking for a great laptop and not wanting to spend a bundle. But be warned, when I finally decided to buy one, I had a hard time finding a Sams club that still had them in stock (call ahead) due back to school buying frenzy.

(Sighing Contentently) It warms my heart to see people enjoying Averatec's high-quality, low-priced machines.

I stated this in another thread, but your internal wireless issues will be solved if you download MSI Ralink's updated driver from their website or windowsupdate.com.

Thanks for Ralink link symbiont. I have been having trouble recently (unexplained) trying to connect wirelessly to my Netgear travel router while on the road. At home, I generally use my D-Link AirPlus Extreme G card with no problems. I installed the Ralink driver tonight, and connected right away. It's great when you get good advice and it fixes a nagging problem. Now I'm back on line from the couch!
