hey guys I was just wondering I'm coming from an MSI laptop with:

    Turion 64 MT-37 @ 2ghz
    1gb of ram
    80 gb hard drive
X700 with 128mb of ram in it.

I was wondering if I should jump up to the IFL90 Or should I wait another year???

Do you guys think its worth it? I dont game all that much anymore and the newest game I have is NWN2, Oblivion.

I dont even have Fear, Quake 4, Prey or any of those yet.
Although I would like more power... I'm just wondering if its worth it.

The 3dmark 06 score would be about 4 times higher which is about 4 times as much power.

I know the 8600M gt would be alot better then my X700. Its just well... I know the 8600 gt Desktop card isn't exactly that great.

    Also 8700M gt's crush the 8600gt.

On top of that Penryn and other intel chipsets are coming out at the end of the year and Q3 of 08. By Q3 of 08 I would imagine more laptop cards are going to be out or on there way.

So what do u guys think, what would u guys do?
My setup is I guess fine for now.

Other things to consider are: I'm working and taking a summer course.
On top of that I have one more semester left.(So I'm wondering if I should just buy a new laptop after school is done in Q3 of 08)

Also If I do buy the IFL90 where and how much could I sell this laptop for?

Well if you can afford to wait and are patient enough to see what new technology's out there, then I say wait. Oblivion is also no small game to run; the IFL-90 is capable of running Oblivion very well so if you were able to get the IFL-90, then you'll be able to play your games on a nice portable platform.

The 8700m GT is just an overclocked 8600m GT, and is only available for 17" desktop replacements, and performance tests reveal that it doesn't beat the top of the line 7xxx series Nvidia cards, namely, the 7950 GTX which remains the top dog in mobile graphics. If you were to wait, the wait for the 8800m GT if it comes out any time soon, but don't expect the high end cards to be in anything other than big 17" notebooks.

As far as 15.4"s are concerned, the IFL-90 is up there on performance, lagging probably only behind the Asus G1S in graphical performance, so the IFL-90 is very future proof and well priced, it's just a question if you are willing to wait for newer technology that'll cost a lot more in the future than now.

Hmm ya. Thats the thing I'm looking for something future Proof and based on the 8600gt desktop model... I don't like it.

However the laptop model seems to be a decent boost over the last generation.
I may be factoring in my poor feelings toward the desktop model too much in this.

Seeing as how you're almost done with school, why not just spend around a grand to build a decent desktop? It'll be cheaper and would allow you to play all the new games for a couple years at higher settings. You'll still have your old laptop for when you're traveling around too!

Well we have a decent desktop at home too. But its the families so everyone uses it.
Plus Sometimes I occasionally play LAN with my brother. :p

The Desktop has an X1950 pro in there upgraded from a 6800gt that was dying from heat issues.
To be honest I think it just needed new thermal pads on the ram.
The thermal pads were warped pretty badly.

Also my bro is a Digital Media Major
and I'm a Computer Science major.

I kinda spoiled myself when buying this because it was supposed to be for school. But a good vid card in the laptop was in my price range. So I said well lets get it so I can run some games on there. Well... now even though the desktop is more powerful I hardly use it lol.

So we both need to be on the computer quite often.

I would wait since you said you only have one semester left. You can get it as a present to yourself for completing college. lol If you don't need it right now I would just wait. Your current laptop is pretty good and should be enough to finish out this last semester.

Ya thats what kinda what I'm thinking Tim.

PLus with all the new stuff that 'supposed' to come out at the point I will have saved money on buying older tech that I didn't exactly need just yet. Also this laptop will have lost the little bit of value I could have sold it for (but probably would not have been able to sell it) but I will get the use out of it :)

so ehh we'll see. Thanx for the advice guys

I also am in the same situation as the OP. Except, I will be in my 2nd year of college at the end of Sept.

I do not want to start another thread, so i'll just ask here :)

My current laptop is in my sig, n I was wondering if I should also step up to the IFL90. I want to be able to game, the only game I have actually tried is Need for Speed Underground 2, and it plays not so decently.

    Any suggestions?

Cool thanx. I'll be ordering the Compal, as soon as the $$ in my account is the exact same as the price of the Compal IFL90. LOL.

I personally have the EL80, bought about February, and the only reasons I'd like to get an FL90 is because it has a) a hatsink+pipe on the chipset, b) 8600GT which has HD-DVD etc capabilities c) looks a bit nicer ;P

The price difference is like a $50 or so where I'm staying now so I'll be planning on selling it I guess and getting an FL90 soon, once the TPM-enabled version comes out tho (I'm getting the VBI, the non-VBI is too expensive).

    We'll see ;)

Meh I ended up getting the new gateway with an 8800gts.

price/performance the gateway was better in my opinion.

That may be a good idea.

It's a killer machine for the money if you don't mind a 17"er.

Mine is running smooth, meaning games, movie, ripping, edit, burn, multi task.
    Background work and more.
The best is the VGA, running game like MOH airborne, just OC the VGA and it runs like hell. (no BSOD or HW error) runs better then default desktop with ATI or NVIDIA VGA card.
3DMARK06 score is 4100. not bad for notebook with 8600M.
