Yes, Clevo is behind a number of manufacturers. If you're bringing it back to the US though, you'll likely not get much in the way of support. I'm a huge Fujitsu fan and would definitely steer you that way if you have the money available.

As for owning a Clevo made laptop...YES a big fat YES. However I agree that going to Taiwn to buy one isnt the best way. For whatever reason we sell a fair number of the Clevo made laptops to people in Chine and taiwan. There has to be a reason they buy here even though they are made there.
The two mfg's. We have seen lead the pack in stability are Clevo and Compal. Mfg's that seem to struggle with uniformity and QC are Uniwill and ECS. Mitac, although huge seems to be a hit or miss producer. They can make a great laptop or one that will kill you on the return side of the deal. (Well not you but the brand name selling it)
For that reason, we (M-Tech laptops) have pretty much settled on Clevo and Compal. Too little money made on laptops to risk getting more than a small percentage back in RMA's. Clevo does seem to be the leader in pushing the new feature envelope. Compal does not look so exciting but their long term quality is very good. As a Laptop brand, we love those two manufacturers. Either one you cannot go wrong.
