    Hi there,

I have a somewhat older Compal HLB0 notebook, running windows XP pro

I have a strange problem with the battery, or the charging of it.

When I recharge the battery everything goes fine, and I can use the computer without problems.
When the battery is full, the charging stops but it does not seem to switch to AC power because from that moment on it runs solely on the battery. It drains the battery in about 40 minutes and after that it obviously stops. It is not recharging the battery.

When I turn the computer off when it has only about 5% left in the battery, the moment it turns off it starts recharging the battery again until it's full again and then it stops charging again and goes through the same cycle of decharging.
It will not start recharging unless I turn the computer off.

Blinking blue light is on when charging
Light goes off after charging (does not stay blue as to indicate battery is charged and your on ac power)

I changed the battery with a new one, this does not solve the problem.
Laptop runs fine without the battery in place.

Any ideas anyone how to deal with this (other than buying a new notebook)

    Battery is a Batel80L6, 11.1V, 4800mAh

Hope you have some ideas? Software problem? Hardware problem?

    Thanks
    Edwin

    Interesting ...

Well, here's what I would try.

Depending on how firm you are with computers, I'd try to boot from USB into Linux/Ubuntu - to see if it not some software thing running on Windows.
If you not are familiar with what I mean with Linux/Ubuntu, then skip this - according to what you tell us, the problem is rooted a lot deeper, so I assume it's not a shallow software problem.

The other idea I have is using a tool called SmartBattery. Compal used that at least for the FL90 model.
It's an application that you could use to tell the battery to not charge over 50% - and that would solve your problem, right? It only runs from battery once it's fully loaded.

You can download it from Intel's site - try to install this.

Are you running 32bit or 64bit Windows?

    Good Luck!
