Just saw the 8600MGT issue thread there and I'm not sure if I'm affected but I've been noticing a few problems of late.
I've started playing Counter Strike Source quite a fair bit and notice even if I play with all settings on low and with 1024*768 resolution my card's *always* over 100'C. (I've seen it reach the high teens quite often)
When this occurs my framerate plummets from around 70-100FPS constant to 20-30FPS and sometimes lower (9-12FPS)
This is on stock settings with no overclocking of any kind. If I play for an extended period of time (around an hour) my CPU gets throttled also.
I leave the window open while I play and raise the laptop a few inches at the back to improve airflow but it still overheats and stutters/stalls/restarts, which is quite annoying...
I don't want to burn the gfx card though so I'm a little worried that the temps are a little too high? Or are they acceptable?
It's a 6224W btw.
Cheers,
B.

From what I've heard, the GPU solder gets affected when the temperature is above around 65C. Usually the CPU and GPU core are rated up to about 100C and 120C respectively, but curiously the solder won't hold on for that high a temperature.
-
Temps are way too high. Send that back to the manufacturer for a replacement ASAP. GPU should not be going over 90. I go into a cleaning frenzy if my GPU hits 80.
-
Yes they're too high! If your getting 100 fps then enable vsync which will prevent your gpu from over-rendering frames and should bring temps down a bit aswell.
-
The 6224W and 6324W are renouned for excessive heat. I would advise you check the heatsink isn't blocked, (unless you want to send it back and have a spare month or so whilst its gone!!) The best way in my experience is to remove the keyboard then takethe GPU heatsink off (carefully) clean it and replace the thermal paste Zepto use with a properly applied amount of AS5 or other similar high performance thermal paste. With my notebook I used to see temps in the mid 90's, worried I took it to peices and found the thermal paste to be too thick. Since then my regime every month is to take the keyboard off, clean the heatsink and reapply thermal paste. (luckily I work for an electronics manufacturer so heatsink paste is readily available to me).

@andygb40: What are your gaming temps now?
-
@namaiki, The max I see is 85C. but the average is around 75-80C. It makes a hell of a difference to my notebook. The heatsink in my notebook is the worst design I've seen. There is only 5 double fins for the GPU. Very bad. I keep meaning to replace the heatsink with a homemade version that has far more.

Thanks all,
I've sent Zepto an email explaining the situation, I think I'd rather get it fixed than have to mess about opening/cleaning it etc. (although I do have some AS5 to spare...)
Even if it did drop 10' I could still hit above the 100' mark, bearing in mind that these were on the lowest settings, the card should be able to handle much more.
We have 3 PC's in the house so I'd say I'd survive month
I've ordered a laptop cooler and plan to get a fan to suck hot air from the exhaust vent quicker and see if it makes any differance.
Thanks again.

You need to clean the heatsink (remove your keyboard). And don't worry about the solder. Solder will melt at a minimum of 185 Degrees Celsius.
-
Starts at 183c and goes up depending on the make up of the solderDont scare the guy!
-
Or maybe a simple explanation would suffice? -
We use Arctic MX-2. it won't hurt if you apply new paste.... I can give you a manual if you shoot me an email.
-
Didnt have any compressed air though but I used some cleaning swab to get the crud from the fan, although there wasn't a whole lot there. I'll have to give it a blast of air tomorrow though.
Gonna boot up CS and see how we're doing`
EDIT: Still hitting 104', might pop you an email for that manual later on if you don't mind Zepto -
@ZeptoUSA:
Do you have any idea if it would be possible to get a spare heatsink assembly for the GPU in the 6324W? I want to try and improve on the very bad design that Inventec did, but don't want to ruin my only heatsink in the process. -
We might have some. Need to look into that.

I once had an Asus g1s, with a 8600M.. I remember than once i was playing Age of Conan, i hit the 110 celcius. I googled it and somebody from Asus said it was normal.. The bad thing was tho that the 8600M apparently thottled down when reaching some certain temp, which gives like 5-10 fps.. Common issue... sh*tty card..
-
i am also interested in a spare heatsink assembly for the GPU in the 6324W.
Temps high whilst gaming...
