Hey guys, for only today, Sunday, May 29th, CompUSA will be selling the Centrino version of the Averatec 1000 for only $1000 after rebates and instant savings! Normally, it sells for $1379.99. They were supposed to sell the Celeron version for $1000, but couldn't get any in stock in time for the ad, so they're substiting the Centrino version for that price!
Here, check out the second to last post.

This is a good deal. I am still leaning towards the 4000 series cause of the dvd burner and svideo out. Other than size, are there any other advantages to the 1000 series?
-
Any word on battery life? Or the existence of an extended battery?

I haven't heard of an extended battery yet. But a French computer website reviewed this laptop and got 4 hours and 55 minutes of battery life out of the standard battery.
A usernamed MonkeyBread on the Unofficial Averatec Forums at www.averatecforums.com says he called customer service and they said they don't have an extended battery available and it won't be made either.
I don't think there's any advantage to it compared to the 4000 other than size and weight. -
Figures. They'd have my money in a heartbeat if they had brains enough to make an extended battery.

if you can get almost 5 hours out of the standard battery, i see no reason why averatec needs to make an extended battery. they will probably just make more standard batteries available for purchase probably sometime down the road.
-
i don't think averatec makes (or will) any extented battery for any of their notebooks. Which is crap as some of them could really use them. Such as the 6100 series which only get one hour out of the battery.

So... anybody want to comment on the feasability of making an extended battery for myself?

Not very convenient, not very conventional, not very possible.
If 5 hours isn't anough, then you are gunna have to look otherwhere for a laptop with good battery life.
With 10 hours in mind, you'r gunna have to get mobile processor, integrated graphics, dual batteries and maybe low power consumption ram?

Buying one of these:
~~Averatec:amd3000+/512mb/80gb/integrated gfx $1000
~~HP:amd3200+/512mb/60gb/ati 200m 128mb $1000
~~Emachines:3400+/512mb/80gb/9600 64mb $900? -
So... basically this one, but with a real battery pack on it?

LOL, ya, somewhat.
Really, maybe a Dell 700m, i think that will take dual batteries.

No, the 700m doesn't take dual batteries. Its standard battery only gives about 2.5 hours of battery life and the extended battery which sticks out a bit gives twice that.
You could buy a Fujitsu Lifebook P7000 series, I think an administrator on these forums has one. I had an older model P5000 series. Both series have a modular bay so you can take out the optical drive and put in an additional battery for at least 8 hours of battery life. -
And they also have a tiny keyboard, and a border around the screen that looks quite silly, in my opinion. Not to mention I'm nervous about heat issues.

Darth - are you referring to the 700m, about the tiny keyboard and white border?
-
Well, sometime in July, you'll be able to buy the batteries for the 1000 and 4000 series on Averatec's website.
-
Just the regular battery, or an extended battery?
-
I wouldn't try the battery thing....go for it though if you want to!
-
Only the regular battery, I'm afraid.
The Averatec 1000 for only $999.99!
