How to enable Lightscribe on Samsung Slot-in drive T082L

    Short version_______________
Flash your firmware with the tool and the version that is included in this archive:
    http://rapidshare.com/files/84301954/SN-T082L_SH00___flasher.rar

Install this generic lightscribe software and a simple program in which the labels are created:
    http://rapidshare.com/files/84303108/Lightscribe_software.rar

You are all done, and can now burn labels directly on lightscribe medias :)

    Long version_________________
When I some time ago bougt my 6224 I choose the slot-in burner, with the anticipitation that it supported lightscribe (it said so at Samsungs website). So i went out and bougt myself some lightscribe medias, installed the necessary software, put the cd in drive, saw how the program recognized the drive and started to burn the label. It was therefore a big surprise and disappointment when the cd after 30 minutes was pushed out the drive with no visible label.

From there on I started to search the net for a solution, but none was to be found. Until recently! I discovered a website containing a newer firmware, exactly firmware SN-T082L_SH00 (where the last 4 are the version numbers). It really isn't directed for this exact drive, as Samsung makes firmware versions depend on an OEM code of the drive. And the OEM code of the firmware isn't the same as the drive's OEM code. I however took the chance!

When you have read so far, it's not much surprise that it worked. I can now, through the exact same process as before (where it didn't work), burn the pretty labels. I haven't experienced any bad things with the new firmware; I can still burn dvd's and nothing else have changed.

Use the same links as above to download the tool, the firmware and the generic software. With this you can also use other programs like NERO to make the labels.
More information about the generic lightscribe software can be found here
The site where at originally found the firmware, techspot.com

When you use the tool and opens the new firmware version, it tells you your existing version. That way you can control you don't allready have this version. I think my old version was SB00.

    Enjoy :)

Note: A conflict between using the new firmware, v. SH00 and emulating the bios (at least using Grub4Dos) is identified. If both situations are active, Windows won't recognize the dvd-drive.

I wonder if the new firmware also now supports read and write of 8cm disks.

The label on my SE-T084L has SN-T082 at the top and SE-T084L at the bottom, which had me wondering if it was just the SN-T082 with different firmware. The SE-T084L has both Lightscribe and reads / writes 8cm disks.

Apparently, according to some sites, the normal DVD burner for the 6625WD (SN-S082H) also has Lightscribe. But when I installed a Lightscribe program, it did not recognize it as a Lightscribe burner, do you think this could be firmware related as well?

Well, the lightscribe program recognized my dvd burner as to support lightscribe, so that's a diffence to your situation.

You can try and install a program called DVDinfo Pro ( link), which tells you a lot about the dvd-drive fx whether it support lightscribe. If it tells you lightscribe isn't supported, I wouldn't think a firm-upgrade would make any difference.
Can you find a official website that tells your drive supports lightscribe?

Also try using Nero InfoTool to find out what your ODD will do.

I followed your instruction and installed both the filmware and the lightscribe software and afterwords my DVD drive has disappeared from My Computer. I insert a dvd and it won't play. I have checked the 'System Devices' and the dvd player is listed as being fully functional. But still doesn't show or play any dvd. I have Vistal Ultimate 32bit.

Any suggestions as to how I could fix this? Thanks.

You could try an see which drive letter has been assigned to the drive, if any. To do so --> control panel/administration (or somthing similar)/create and format partitions. If the dvd drive doesn¨t have any drive lettet assigned, just do so.

I also use Vista Ultimate 32bit and haven't had the problem

YES, I would say so. Try and install the DVDinfo program mentioned above and see whether it checks the lightscribe box

I would start by uninstalling the IDE channel which has the UDMA-2 transfer mode, then let Vista redetect the hardware (go to the first item on Device Manager, right click and select Detect hardware changes). This should reinstall the IDE channel and the connected device.

After trying to install the lightscribe filmware the slot-in DVD drive disappeared from my 6224. I could boot from the drive but it was not showing in Vista Ultimate and not playing any media. I tried all the solutions in this forum, other forums and sites without success. Eventually I had to downgrade to XP Pro and everything went back to normal and the DVD was OK. What does this say about Vista? I also noticed a slight improvement in my battery and generally more relevant system was displayed than with Vista.

I wonder if Vista was rushed out without sufficient testing?

I wont comment on your attack on Vista as it is cliché, but I would however like to know, whether the upgrade was successful i terms of enabling lightscribe?

I use Vista Ultimate and my drive functions without problems

The Lightscribe upgrade worked OK. Later for some reason the DVD drive was not displayed in 'My Computer'. So I assume it was a Vista issue since many have reported DVD drive problems with Vista.

Tested and working on 3415W slot-in Samsung/Toshiba. Burns discs and burns Lightscribe images with the software from Lightscribe official site. Wow!

I am just curious to what happens to the burnt off particles in the disc drive, do they collect? Would this lead to malfunction of the drive later on??

If it dissapears from Vista, downgrade to XP and it appears. Really no other solutions at the moment until Vista SP1.

    Gentlemen’s, Ladies:

I just spend a couple of hours changing a broken DVD Writer Module TS-L632 on my SAMSUNG Q35. I replaced it with a SAMSUNG SN-T082. Once I have replaced it - the drive didn’t showed up. I checked the BIOS – no success just limited features.

Here is the solution. The new drive is delivered in cable select mode. So I opened the hard disc bay from the laptop and changed the jumper settings from (i) master to (ii) cable select. Success, the drive showed up.

Then I utilized the flash-tool from SAMSUNG and flashed the new firmware SH00. After re-boot the drive didn’t showed up. Since I found on some web-pages that the SN-T082 can be changed from master to slave and cable select via firmware, I assume that the new firmware is the slave version. I opened the hard disc bay again and changed the jumpers to master. After re-boot it worked. :)

Now I still run XP and have no ideas about VISTA. However, I assume if a drive doesn’t show up it is still the old master, slave or cable select issue.

    Happy Sunshine!

Experience with the Q35 is slightly off-topic here although it is interesting. That problem is cause because the Q35 uses only one IDE channel in order to save a little power, so the master / slave / cable select settings do matter.

The Zeptos shouldn't encounter this problem since the ODD has one IDE channel to itself and it won't matter whether it is master or slave or whatever.

Install the DVDInfo program linked to at the first page (or any other program that reads your hardware info like Everest or SiSoft Sandre). It will tell you the manufacturer of the drive and the firmware version.

I don't think Zepto has sold any other types of Slot-in drives from Samsung other than the T082L

HELP! This update worked fine for me, as shown in previous posts. I was able to update, and then burn media. Just tried to insert a disk (two weeks after updating) and now I "have no disk drive". It won't read or write or even virtually eject from My Computer. Is there ANY other way of getting listed again? I really really cannot go back to XP, I have done so much work in getting Vista set-up. Help!

I've fixed it! I don't know EXACTLY which one of the following fixed it, but heres what I did. Please dont ask me for help as this may just be luck for me!

I downloaded this REG file (registry edit) and installed it, and rebooted.
    http://portal.itauth.com/files/fix-cdrom-driver-issue.reg

My drive didn't show, I was going to give up, so I played around with my Vista activation, deactivated it and reactivated, and rebooted. I was just playing around with these.

After I rebooted, it showed back up again! It may not be permanent.
I have Vista Ultimate x86 (32bit) and SP1 installed via the Windows Update hack.

    Comment!

I have a bit information about this.

It's the Vista OEM emulation crack that makes the dvd-drive not being recognized by Windows.

As far as I have been able to narrow down the problem, it's the Grub4Dos element in the crack, that applies the same drive address to the dvd drive and to the emulated drive (sometimes referred to as the GRUB_INVALID_DRIVE). It seems as a newer version of Grub4Dos fixes the issue, but don't know if it can be implemented.

I don't have any solutions for this, other that not to update to SP1 (as this disables other activation strategies). Another thread concerning the dvd drive disappearing from Windows in a 6625WD can found here. The solution to that problem, was to set the 2nd IDE channel to "none" in bios, but don't think you can do that in the 6224.

Anyone having an idea to solve this?

    NEWS!

By testing, I've found that there is a trade off between enabling lightscribe (with the firmware v. SH00), and being able to emulate the bios without loosing the dvd drive in Windows!

Using the original firmware, v. SB00, emulating the bios is possible without loosing the dvd drive, sacrificing the lightscribe feature.

The original firmware, v. SB00, can be downloaded here. It's a self-executable and flashes the firmware immediately. Use at own risk.

Phew! Thanks for the above update, I have returned my drive to the original firmware before uninstalling the SP1. It seems that you were right, it is something to do with BIOS & activation after installing SP1 update, it renders the drive inoperable. I have updated the drive firmware back again to enable Lightscribe again, i really want it!
I will lay off SP1 until someone finds a workaround for the disappearing drive! Thanks for your help.

If you have time, you could try an test the firmware to a drive called sn-t082a.
It seems to be a slim-drive with the same specs as our sn-t082l. The firmware comes in a SH00 version, and might work better than the SH00 version I suggested, as it was ment for a non-slim-drive.
Link to potential working firmware (site works only in IE)

I will test for you, as I can just re-flash the firmware if something goes wrong? How will this test benefit me? Which one out of the 4 do I need to download and install?

Don't test it because of me, but test it, if you find it beneficial, as it might make it possible to have lightscribe enabled in the same time as using bios emulation. If it doesn't work, it should be possible to just flash it back - however no guarantees.

If you find it beneficial to give it a go, download the firmware for model sn-t082a ver. SH00. The SB00 version to the same drive, is most likely not to give any benefits. The last two alternatives, is the two versions we have used so far.

Let the forum know how it goes...

    Hi!

I have a big problem with my Asus L5800C laptop. I changed my DVD writer to Samsung SN-T082 but the laptop doesn't look it. I think the problem is in selecting master/slave or cable select.
Could you write me the place where the SN-T082 can be changed from master to slave and cable select via firmware?
I didn't find the correct firmware on the internet untli now.

    Waiting your answers.

Yep, I see no problem there.
The problem seems to be linked to the Grub4Dos element i some emulation software...

So don't say, there aren't any benefits by using licensed software ;)

SamsungODD lists two firmwares for the SN-T082: SH00 has CSEL=high and SB00 has CSEL=low.

Sorry I can't give direct links but Samsung have put that site in some strange IE-only code where I can't copy the links.

If you haven't see it already, this discussion of the ND-6650A may be relevant.

Lucky me for having Vista Home Premium 64bit retail then. :D

    CSEL = Cable select?
How do I know which one to use?

I you want to use Lightscribe you should use the firmware for the sn-t082l v. SH00, as it has been proven to work with Vista (without emulation) and enables lightscribe. That's the version I introduced in #1.

    This might help.

(My post was in response to the guy who asked about an Asus).
