I want to add RAM to the UX notebook. What kind do I need? I know DDR2-533, but is it PC4200 or PC4300 or something else? I'm confused.

edit: It's PC4200... too late over here. :p

So, if I find a DDR2-533 PC4200 chip, I should be OK... is that correct? Also, am I correct in understanding that buying the twin chips is pointless because there's only 1 slot? Basically, wouldn't that negate the benefits of dual channel memory?

    Thanks in advance!

Yes the DDR2-4200 will be fine. Whatever you've got in youre system currently, I'd just get the exact same to rule out any incapatabilities.

The UX has two chips, but the 256 is soldered to the motherboard, so only one is replaceable. The RAM is very expensive because it is microdimms (or something like that). In order to make the unit small and light, the components must be smaller too. Anything over 512 negates the dual channel benefit, but that is very slight anyway, and not really important in this category machine. The UX is not intended as a desktop replacement type of machine- it is a solid, durable ultraportable. The MX is a better performer (dedicated graphics card, etc.) but the trade-off is size and weight.

Anyone know why to add an extra 1 gig to the UX, Portable One charges $600?! Doesn't something like a Kingston KVR533D2N4/1G 1GB DDR2-533 PC2-4200 for < $100 work? Is the Portable One RAM that they add that special? I don't understand the $500 difference in charge. Even the "best" 1 GB RAM doesn't seem to cost that much from what I've seen.

The UX uses MDIMMS; until just recently they weren't even available in 1 GB. Unfortunately, they are very expensive. From what I've read they are about half the size of regular RAM- saves space, but costs a lot.

Ah, thanks for the input. That makes sense. The prices I saw were for SODIMM's, which is the normal notebook RAM size. MDIMM's are only produced by Infineon. I can't even find an online retailer that will sell, not to mention the price of, the 1 GB MDIMM's. :p
