Hi Everyone,
Maybe someone can help me. I'm having problems with USB mice on this netbook - NEC VersaPro UltraLite Type VS (VJ18V/SA-7 VS UltraLite). This is an Intel Atom 1.86 GHz powered netbook with Intel GMA 500 graphics and a 64GB SSD.
The machine comes with a built in trackpoint and 3 USB ports.
It is running WinXP Pro SP3 and has the latest drivers.
For some reason I am not able to get any USB mice to work with the thing. I've tried a Logitech, the Apple Mighty Mouse and a Genius one. All 3 work elsewhere. Windows initially recognises them but they stop working after moving a few inches across the screen. The red light under the mouse stays ON.
I've tried disabling the track point in the BIOS and the same problem persists if I do that as well even with a non-functional track point. I've also tried disabling the track point in Windows as well as uninstalling it and the Microsoft mouse driver.
Does anyone have any ideas what this could be?
Thanks![]()

Have you tried other devices such as thumb drivers, external hard drives etc to ensure the ports are working?
-
Thanks for your reply.
Yes, the ports with with USB flash sticks. Files copy back and forth without problem.
I also tried going into BIOS and enabling/disabling the USB Legacy setting.
I tried all 3 ports.
I tried disabling the trackpoint in Windows (Uninstalling it).
I tried killing processes in the hope that it's the trackpoint driver conflict but couldn't find any specific processes for it.
In the Control Panel I see that the USB mouse is referred to as USB Human Interface Device and HID-compliant Device.
The NEC trackpoint is called NEC Pointing-device. It however has a 'mouse' icon. I don't know if that means anything but Control Panel gave it a Mouse icon. ?Conflict?
Thanks. -
I'm not sure it's a conflict. I can hook a couple of mice to my Dell Latitude (which also has a trackpoint) and all work simultaneously without problems.
I'm very interested in this machine, what's the average battery life? Does the trackpoint work well?
Thanks! -
The trackpoint works very well. The battery life - on the small battery - that is the standard battery which comes with the machine by default - is about 4+ hours. The build quality of this machine is phenomenal, I also use a Panasonic Toughbook CF-Y7 and it's in the same range, although the NEC machine does not have a waterproof keyboard. It's very light.
The performance is pretty good. It can decode H264 video in 720p using CoreAVC. It can do H264 480p using VLC. This is all in software.
The less demanding XviD and DivX codecs do 720p video without issues in VLC.
The SSD is very fast too.
However, despite running PowerDVD 8 and the latest Windows XP graphics drivers I can't get this machine to decode HD video on the video chipset. It should be possible but I think Intel did not provide the correct drivers. It may be possible to get it right under Windows 7.
Despite having to use a USB adapter for the mouse, I still like this machine. It's a pity Intel does not release better video drivers though to get this machine to play back HD video (H264, MPEG-2 or VC-1) in hardware.
