Hello. I am wondering now many of you have Feisty Fawn working on your HEL80. I have tried installing it multiple times and have not had success.
I am attempting to install Ubuntu onto my laptop that already has Windows XP on a 12GB partition. I would like to have a dual boot setup. I believe I have BIOS version 119b

    - When I boot from the 64-bit desktop live CD it won't even boot into the OS. It freezes up before it gets there.
    - The 64-bit alternate CD boots but gives an error saying that the packages or software did not install properly.
    - I believe I also tried the 32-bit desktop live CD and it also won't load. Are there some BIOS settings I need to change before I can install properly?

I have tried searching these forums for answers and also the Ubuntu forums, but I haven't seen that others have had problems.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

    -Ben

Thanks for your reply. I believe that i do have the latest BIOS (Jan 07). I will check to make sure.
Isn't safe mode an option after Ubuntu is installed? My problem is that I can't even install the OS. I have tried the alternative install CD.

    thanks for the quick reply.

Thanks for the quick tips andyasselin! I thought I had the latest BIOS, but i guess I didn't. After installing 121b that Feisty Fawn installed like a charm! In fact I am writing from Ubuntu now.

I would still be interested to hear how other EL80 users that have Feisty Fawn are getting along with it...

I've been running feisty since it's release on my HEL80. It installed fine. I didn't have the newest bios. I flashed it a couple weeks after the install.

There was a problem for me configuring dual screens, but overall, Feisty ran perfectly. I also had some problems with virtualization since I wanted to run adobe products. Other than those two hitches, Feisty required no configuration besides telling it to use restricted drivers.

Will run Kubuntu fiesty when I get my Sager 2090. KDE is just my preferred desktop.

I just installed Kubuntu Feisty, the installation went smoothly, but I have spent already three days in customizing, I just don't like the way it comes out of the box, the mayor fault is the font anti aliasing, you have to add patched libraries for the fonts to look just as good as in windows  .

Also getting compiz fusion to work is bit tricky, I couldn't get decent performance with the drivers installed from the Ubuntu repository, I'm going to try to build the newest beta drivers from nvidia or if anyone has any tips for installing compiz fusion and get a good performance please share them.

But aside from that is a very stable distribution and has tons of support from the user community. :)

I have been having some trouble with power management. It appears that when the laptop suspends that it does not fully suspend. The wireless light does not turn off and the green power light stays lit and does not flash like it does in Windows. I will come back after a few hours to find that the battery is dead and the laptop is off.

Anyone else having power issues on the HEL80 in Ubuntu?

works flawless in ArchLinux for me. I am aware that this is an ubuntu thread but Linux is Linux nonetheless - so I think it ought to work fine.

    cheers

Hmm... it looks like it went into suspend properly this time. The power light was flashing. The monitor did not wake up though when I pressed the power button. It appears to come out of suspend properly except for the monitor. Nothing I do seems to make the monitor come back on except a hard reboot.
It does this to me in Windows XP also (dual boot). I found a Microsoft patch for the issue from this forum: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=110998

Anyone had this problem also in Linux?

Out of curiosity, what video drivers are you using, nvidia-glx or nvidia-glx-new? I figure that might have some effect on it. Another thing I'd ask is what software repos are you using, and what updates have you been applying? Obviously, I don't have a HEL80, but on my HGL30 I had some minor power issues before I got everything up to date. Another thing is, if you're running dual-monitors it might have to do with how your xorg.conf is configured.
