Ultimate dummy guide to flash Compal HEL80 to the latest bios: 123B
0. Plug in the power supply!
1. Download http://www.mediafire.com/?3cxsnjdmfxf
2. Run HEL80_123B.exe. This will write a bootable cd. Let it verify the image (reinsert the cd)!
3. Reboot with cd in drive and press F12 on bootscreen to boot from cd.
4. Select the cddrive and let the boot process complete.
5. Press a key and type r: and ENTER.
6. Run EL80FLH.BAT. Do not interrupt the flash process!
Beeps during the flash process and turning the laptop off without warning after the flash process is completely normal.
That's it.

Sticky please!
This should always be at the top. -
All went well until step 5, got a bad command error or something similar to that.
Would like to update bios to enable the core2 duo functions.
Any suggestions? -
-
Then that may be the problem.. the drive that's listed is A.. so how does one change the drive letter? Plz excuse my ignorance with this. I can figure out most work arounds.. but sometimes we all need some help.
Man do I feel like a DUMMY!!!
Darn these feeble eyes.. LOL. After doing a little searching on the net, the solution was right in front of my eyes. Didn't notice the : after the R in the instructions. The flashing went fine... thank goodness.
Thanks for your help. -

You mean tasos_gti sent you a PM in ADDITION to posting the question is two different threads?
I wonder how many other people he PM'd as well.
Well, he is new so a little forgiveness is in order...maybe -
Found some releasenotes for each new bios.

Thought I`d share a bootable image with bios 116b for hel80. I used alphagamma`s old 114 image and just replaced the old flashfile with the new vista ready bios. So he did all the work besides my few mouseclicks to replace the flash file. That is also why the files appear to be an older bios, but it really is the new 116bios released 01.feb.07
The image can be found at my webserver:
http://raypetter.homelinux.net/hel80
Instructions:
#burn the image on a CD
#boot the image using f12
#start the flash prosess by executing the .bat file located in r:
Cheers. -
if anyone wants to use a USB key, here's HP's format tool:
http://h18000.www1.hp.com/support/files/serveroptions/us/download/20306.html
Download and extract these DOS files. Point to them in the format tool to make it bootable.

Im running XP / Ubuntu with the newest bios without any probz.
Does anyone know if it`s possible to flash the go7600 ??? -
Can anyone confirm that the keys for changing the back light strength are changed with 116B?
I thought first that my screen was defunct, there are very dark brightness levels now and the key for increasing the brightness doesn't work anymore?
****, it doesn't seems to store the brightness value now, always black screen at startup, back to 114B i think. This probably has something to do with it:
6. Fix Vista Brightness control malfunction issue. -
I have flashed the BIOS to 116B.
TPM no longer works. I have downloaded the latest Infineon update. It is constantly in temporary disabled state in Windows Vista or in the BIOS enabled but deactivated. I've tried everything. Resetting BIOS defaults, deactivating, clearing, reactivating to no avail. Has anybody else had this problem?
How do you default back to a pervious BIOS?
Thanks in advance. -
-
You can set the LCD brightness level with RMClock. -
-
Also interested in how you got your copy of RMclock to control the brightness. Dmitri (The tool's developer) has said several times that it doesn't work for this model notebook. -
It's not directly RMClock's fault, the latest BIOS just changed something with the brightness level handling insofar RMClock could detect them, but I still had to set them at 100%, then the FN keys worked as before. -
I don't have a reason to update my Bios for Vista, I'm happy with XP and Ubuntu Feisty Fawn. -
Something tells me this was a failed flash, during the flashing sequence the PCspeaker made beeps once every second and the machine turned itself off without informing me that it was finished in any way, on first reboot there was a lot of hardware that had gone missing in the device manager and (amongst others the finger print reader and the wireless network card) and it found a new piece of hardware that it called PCI flash memory but failed to install. the fan still turns itself on and off intermittently (witch i thought was an issue this bios version was meant to fix) but at least it still boots thank god and the logo that appears when i first turn it on has changed from the name of the shop that sold it to me to "Phoenix something or other" wich i think must be a good sign.
can anyone tell me what has happened ? -
-
yeah sounds like a normal flash, but i have no clue about the missing hardware detection... also, the fan will cycle on and off intermitantly still, but eventually it will recognize that it is doing so and go to a constant low. If you update your graphics drivers to one of the laptopvideo2go drivers, it will improve GPU control, which also helps with the fan cycling.
for me, 111A bios + laptopvideo2go driver 84.69 makes my fan stay at a constant med-low when i'm just surfing the web, etc. Before both updates, my fan cycled on and off every 10 seconds while doing the same things. -
Ok, thanks a lot for the response
-
the links to the earlier versions in the first post dont seem to work, i think i might have to revert seeing as how RMclock doesnt seem to be able to keep the cpu at 2GHz any more ? can anybody confirm this problem or tell me how to work around it, i have to play a concert with my laptop in two days so i would like to play it safe but the varying cpu speed seems to be the source of some very annoying pops and clicks coming from the fw soundcard.

Here's a bit of background info, can you guys tell me if this 116B update can solve my problem?
I run Windows XP and the bios version is still the old 114B. Last friday Windows did an auto update and after it is installed, the computer won't boot up properly anymore. It'll go as far as the Windows logo screen then reboot itself and stuck at the same spot again. I can boot up in safe mode and do a windows system restore and roll back to the config before the update installation. I also looked at the event log and see there's an error with ACPIEC that seems to be the cause of the problem:
\Device\ACPIEC: The embedded controller (EC) hardware didn't respond within the timeout period. This may indicate an error in the EC hardware or firmware, or possibly a poorly designed BIOS which accesses the EC in an unsafe manner. The EC driver will retry the failed transaction if possible.
Has anyone experience this after a recent windows update? Would 116B solve this problem? Thanks. -
So I have installed the 116B version, but still running into the same problem.
As of today, I still can't have any windows update installed, without it booting up to the windows logo screen, then a quick flash of bluescreen with some sort of error message on it, then autoreboot and go through the same sequence again.
I've tried to disable the 'automatically restart' under Windows 'Starup and recovery' setting, hoping the bluescreen will stay on so I can read the actual error message, but it continues to quickly reboot itself when the bluescreen shows up.
Anyone knows what's going on? -

Hi...
I have bought hel80i (not hel80 or hel81) and updated the bios from 114B to 116B because the noise from the cooler was so loud....it was constanly on...but now the noise is worse...
What should I do?I have vista 32bits installed on my hel80i....
I saw a new bios update was released, 118B on compal.com......
But this will not installing in vista(i dont know how to do it with the boot-cd) because an error message is shown:"the size of the rom size is wrong"...what is wrong?
Another question: Can I use drivers from both hel80 and hel81 when I have Hel8i?
please help me...The cooler drives me crazy.... -
i didn't have to go through all that procedure in the first post. I downloaded bios from Compal site, unzipped it and ran the .exe file. That seemed to update bios right then and there, with no rebooting neccessary. The computer rebooted after the bios was flashed. I think that's easier, specially for people like me, who've never done this before.
-
The other thing is that when your system doesn't flash right, you run the risk of not being able to get into windows. The steps in this guide can often help those people restore.
Lastly, it's advised not to flash your system unless there is a problem you are having that the flash update can address.
Just some things to keep in mindGrats on a smooth update
-
It can be dangerous updating the BIOS from within Windows. I'm glad it worked for you, but it's highly recommended against.
-
whoops, guess I had more luck than brains.
I was hoping the bios would affect the fan - so it wouldn't be that loud. I had an old bios installed (028B) and I picked it up somewhere that fan would be more quite with the new BIOS. I'm desperately trying to find that info now, cos it's unfortunately not the case -
anybody testet 118B?
Cant download all files from compal.com..
could anyone give me a guide to boot from usb-disk?
i have tried but cant get it working.. -
http://www.compal.com/asp/driver_dnd/index.htm
here it list 116B as the newest. where is this 118B?
also anyone noticed that on that link, version 028 has been modified in january 2007?
also if you look here .... http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scr...dows+Vista*+32&lang=eng&strOSs=164&submit=Go!
which is intels drivers for the VBI compals, it shows the 028 version as the one to get for the vista 32bit. ????? -
With 118 BIOS it's the same. Just click on the .exe and away it goes. It seem to be a little more stable in gaming HL2, FEAR etc, but it could be just my imagination wanting it to be so. No ill effects at all though.
-
I tried to upgrade my bios. An error message came up, and now it doesent start anymore. What happend, what can i do to make it start, or did i brake something?
-
With what utility you tried to do it and what was the message ?
-
hmm, im not so good at english so i don't really now what utility means. I have got some problems whit error messages when i have shot down programs. So my reseller send a bios upgrade and when i tried to upgrade the bios, i got a blue screen that said that some files could not be read.
