Have anyone tried other mxm II cards (other than ati hd 3650, ati hd 4650, ati hd 4670) for example ati hd 4850 or higher number models ??

    Best Regards,

You are stuck with MX-II cards meaning that anything with a 8 in the model number is not going to fit.

Ahhhhh nice - a case study.

11 month, that's good to hear, not bad for baking job.

    Anyway, yeah, you could re-bake or get a replacement: ATI 3400, 3450, 3470, 3650 DDR2, 3650 DDR3, 4650 DDR2, 4670 DDR2, 4650 DDR3, 4650 DDR3 are your options, ordered my performance (and price).

You can get the 34(0/5/7)0 series all new for around 50€ from China, but you won't be able to play games (you are a Linux guy, so you won't mind, right?).

For casual gaming, you need to get at least a 3650, which is 100€ new.

Used cards are cheaper of course - prices are from ebay ... have a look yourself.

    Cheers

99% certain it it the GPU - again. For some it stops right before/during/after POST (most common), some even load OS but have black screen (like yours), some have heavily scambled screen but still showing something (my case, had screen 6 times, each approx. 200 x 300 pixels).

Is it again the GPU? Easy to find out - open it, bake it/get new one, test it, reassemble it.

    Good luck

Nice! If I were you, I would look out for a cheap ATI 3400/3450/3470 on ebay.

You can get it used for 20-40€ - and always sell your 8600M for 50€ and more - but out of fairness, declare it as repair-ware!

    See you next year :)

    Cheers

@Dr.Colossos: a 6-way split screen means an EDID bump has failed. It is almost always reflowable.

Yes - I baked it - a year ago, it worked, but I wanted to go with something else. I went with a 3650 DDR2 after that, I am on a 4650 DDR2 for half a year or so.

So far, I only could get *one* dead 8600M GT not to work again out of 12 or so.

That would the 3650 DDR 2 - for 40€ to 60€ used, 100€ new. Be cautious about the 4650 - for some FL90 models, it works only with a PCI-E factor of x1 instead of x16, leading to bad in-game performance.

As always, if you want gaming, don't get a laptop if a desktop pc is an option - unless you love to work with your laptop, as I do :)

    Cheers

My 8600M GT played SC2 easily, so definetly no issues with the 3650 (Y).

The ati 3650 ddr3 version are going for pretty cheap on ebay. Just search for "ati 3650 256mb" and lots of searches will pop up.

But they are not fully compatible, as it looks - I know, because I had one.

Several people don't get the external video working ... if tht is no issue for you, go ahead.

P.S.: tony211, got link? I do not find "good" deals on ebay.com at all, thanks

Hi, I rebaking again and it work again ..

but it work 2 weeks, and i most to rebaking again.

I bake at 180°c, 10 minutes. I've read on a forum that the temperature max to approch "fusion" is 250°c .. but i don't to take this risk . how do you think about it ?

    Thx

If I do it in the oven, I also have it in there for 10 minutes at 180°C.

With the heat-gun, I do it like this:
    - 90 seconds pre-heat in lower heat level (top & bottom of whole card, going in circles)
    - 90 seconds full-heat in higher heat level (top & bottom of whole card, going in circles)
    - 60 seconds full-heat in higher heat level (top side & chip only, going in circles)
    - 90 seconds cool-down in lower heat level (top & bottom of whole card, going in circles)

    Letting it rest, chip-side up.

    Cheers

I read that the right temperature to use is 200°C. 250°C will destroy the board instantly.

    180°C is not enough - 60/40 solder melts @ 186-190°C.

    hi .

After a period where i backing my gc always 2-3 weeks, i think my 8600M GT die now.
In all, i think i baking it 15 or 20 times..
So, last week, i retry a baking , and for a first time, no result.
Just a strange thing, when i run the pc, the os start, and after baking, no os start, pc run but nothing append.
So i try to rebake it, and no result at all. I will retry baking, maybe with a more warmning in bake (210°c) . Will see,
otherwise, i see for a 3650 ATI in ebay, 70€ new from China with free ship.

    thanks for tips

256MB DDR3 - DDR3 is trouble - might not work properly. I had one of these, and could not get external display to work.

But others had the same problem with 512MB DDR2 versions.

Give it a try if you feel lucky - success rate is 50% I'd say.

    Good luck

only trouble is external display ?

Otherwise, before buy ati, i try some last tests like balling my card.. but its hard .

I baking a last time the nvidia on oven at 230-250°c, the card pcb color have changed (blue to green), composants seems ok.

I now balling all tin binding, i hope this last try give me a chance, but i think the best thing is to buy an ati ^^'

    Thx for your help .

ps : is there any tuto for balling in the forum ?

pps : what do you think of this card (ati 4570 512mo ddr2) : New ATI Mobility Radeon HD4570 MXM II 512MB DDR2 VG.M9206.004 VGA Card HD3650 | eBay

I once had tried an ATI 4570 from MXM upgrade - it worked right out of the box.

Sure worth a try - performance about the same as 3650 DDR2.

No idea about reballing here, I never went down that road.

    Good luck

Does anyone know where or perhaps someone who offer reballing services? Also, considering some time has passed, are there anymore direct drop in MXM2 GPU replacements for the IFL90? (Outside of the 3650)

    Still, only ATI ... 3400/3450/3470/3650/4570/4650/4670

Reballing the NVidia 8600M GT is kinda pointless - it just will break again, anyway, so if you want reballing, put it in the oven - cheaper, and despite not being a long term fix, reballing isn't either.

    Cheers

Hi everyone, I've been reading this forum and specially your section about graphic cards on Compal Computer.

    Dear Dr. Colossos
First of all, thank you so much for all the information you are giving to us.
    Secondly. Sorry for asking.

I've got a Compal IFT00, ( ::: Marasst Inc :::). As you said it's quite old computer, but I love it so much! =). It has a great performance, I was running it with 4GB RAM and windows 7. Until I played "lovely" starcraft 2 and my Graphic card broke down.

Do you know If the compatibility of the cards for IFT00 and FL90 is the same? (I've read they are not so different). My IFT00 used to "wear" Nvidia GF 8400M GS. So It'd be the same about vBIOS and so on... I couldn't find any information about upgrading MXM (mxm-upgrade) on IFT00 and I've emailed Compal Services but they just say .

Today I was about to buy the one ATI 3650 256DDR3. I read on the specifications of my Compal that It can use only 256 and 128 mb cards...
    ift00.mxmII.JPG
But They also said I wouldn't be able to use windows 7 and I did use it...

    I'm using the 1.18bios... well, I was...

Now I am scared of buying the 256 DDR3 one if it doesnt work, the 512mb might not be accepted by my mother board. And ing Nvidia silimilar Chips doesn't last a lot...

Any advice?????? PLEASE!?!?!!??!!? Any reliable Ebay seller¿?

Once again, sorry for asking and thank you so much guys

SORRY FOR WRITING AGAIN! I forgot to say that my Nvidia Gforce 8400M GS is a MXM-II type. I have it in my hands right now and it is 78x73mm size...

    Thanks a lot... =)

Which would you recommend? I've heard that the 3650 has problems using the s-video/d-sub/vga ports displaying video out... Is this still true?

3650 DDR2 512MB normally works, at least internal display and in 99% of cases also the VGA out.

No idea about S-Video - never really used that.
