I just found this notebook on my quest for the perfect college notebook and decided to make a thread about it. I don't know much about the brand, but it's getting great reviews from pcmag.com and cnet.com. What do you guys think?

    1.7 Pentium M (Dothan)
128 Mb ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 Pro Turbo
    60 Gb Hardrive (5400 rpm)
    512 Mb RAM
    15.1 SXGA+ Screen
    3 USB ports

All for $1500! To me that's a steal!

I believe this is one of those "whitebox" systems. It's like buying a clone desktop. Personally, for notebooks, if it doesn't have a big name with a proven track record for support/service/warranty, then I'd have to think twice before considering. Now, this is just my personal opinion, so you don't have to go with what I think, but I think it's worth considering. Try calling the manufacturer to find out about their warranty and how repairs are done. Also call the support line and try to ask some questions. If they don't seem knowledgable, try again another time, maybe it was just the person. If the lack of knowledge persists, than maybe they're support will not be on par with the larger companies. But, if evertthing about the unit (including support) meets your requirements, then you should definitely consider it as an option.

Yes this is a Compal56 similiar to that offered on such sites as powernotebooks.com and discountlaptops.com. It is a very popular and favored laptop by many. I considered it greatly in my laptop search for college but went with the Sager 5690 for its raw power as mine will be used mainly as a desktop replacement and to run 3d engineering programs. However it is a very good system for 1500.

I have one of these compal notebooks sold through jetta international it is their 9520 model. it is a great unit very solid and dependable. I do not know anything about the vendor you are looking at. I do know that jetta has been around since 1991 and I have worked with them since 1998 and have never had any problems with their units or getting support when needed.
