Hi there,
I viewed the CNET video presentation of the Averatec 6200 and was amzed by the features: http://reviews.cnet.com/AVERATEC_6200/4505-3121_7-30994095.html?tag=pdtl-list
However, I was struck by the fact that the dvd image was not over the whole screen but only would occupy part of it. So why should you bother buying a larger and wide screen if the viewing area for dvd is limited?
Can anyone explain why that happens and if there is any fix? Or is it a problem with XGA etc.?
Thank you for the insight

The amount of screen the DVD image takes up depends on the aspect ratio of the original movie (ex., 16:9, 2:1, 1.85:1). Not all movies are filmed the same way.
It's the same as when I watch widescreen movies on my home TV and the 'black bars' above and below the image are different depending on the movie.Sometimes the image takes up more of the screen, sometimes less. the same thing happens with the 6200 or any other widescreen. The fixed aspect ratio determines how much of the screen is filled. Look for that next time you watch a home movie in widescreen format. Some aspect ratios make the image look tiny. I have the AV6200 and am impressed with DVD viewing so far.

Thanks Traci,
you may not believe it, but I don't own a TV and the rare times I have wathed a DVD I did so on a notebook...
Is the quality of the Averatec screen really good? In case you knew, how would it compare with a Sony X-Brite technology screen?

Unfortunately, I have nothing to compare the Averatec's screeen quality with except for what I'm used to with other non-notebook video sources. I;m a total geek gear-head, so I'm into resolution and all that. The DVD pictures simply look fantastic. The resolution is 1280x800, and I don't know how that compares with Sony. But as far as subjective image quality goes, the image is fabulous.
It does tend to suck that you can't get a hands-on taste of the Averatec 6200 since its only on-line right now. I am not one to buy things sight unseen, but this I _had_ to have. It was well worth it.
Happy Shopping!
