I beleive my compal hgl30 refuses to show vista sp1 update because my fingerprinter has an outdated driver.

    Under cause #5
    http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=948343#method5

I have found some updated HP drivers for the same device but i am reluctant to install them as i am unsure of what might happen.
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...&cc=us&dlc=en&os=2093&product=3554101&lang=en

I was just wondering what compal and others are doing to get past this. Vista SP1 is nice and has many fixes whihc i have noticed on my other systems.

    Thanks
    Pete

Well whomever you called isn't aware of the problem , if you look at the link clearly through Microsofts it says :

AuthenTec Fingerprint Sensor with the Atswpdrv.sys driver file – version 7.7.1.7 or earlier

Look at the driver provided thru compal and look at the version ? Someone needs to release drivers for these compal laptops that is version 7.7.1.7+.

I would also advise anyone against updatein to sp1 using the manual download, there is a reason microsoft isnt allwoing it to download bc there is a compatibility problem with this old driver.

This is general question, doesn't the fingerprint get recorder in a server in the www? Is this safe?

Plus, if it's recorded in your laptop, is it safe anyway, can't someone come and steal it?

A fingerprinter is like any other hardware...It requires drivers and or software to function on its own. It has no reason to communicate to a server or any other person unless u tell it to. It creates a profile based on your finger and stores it somewhere on the computer...It later uses that to authenticate a login.

Has anyone found a solution tot this problem yet.

Any updates with this Issue ?
I am curious as how others are getting the vista service pack to install without getting rid of this problem ?
Maybe i am having a problem, does anyone with a hgl30 have the SP showing up in the WinUpdates ?

I had this issue with my JFL92. Once I had found that link, I went to the website of the company that made the fingerprint reader and just downloaded the driver update from them. After that, SP1 installed without any problems -- and its pretty great: not only do all of my USB devices now work properly, but copying files takes less time and I have 30GB more free space on my hard drive (the last one utterly baffles me, but its true).

Yes, I read it in another thread, the guy was having porblems with installing SP1, then he installed the latest driver for the fingerprint device and then he was able to install SP1.

Do a search on the top of the page about fingerprint driver, you'll get other threads.

Apparently Microsoft Modified their SP1 to work with the older drivers...The laptop just installed it yesterday on its own thru win updates.

    Thanks
