The closest Laptop I can find to my 'ideal' is the S41 from Benq. Anyone know how to get it in the US? Or anyone know of a similarly equipped Lappie available here?

    Thanks,
    W

I played around with one of these for a few minutes the other day and I think the S41 is the closest BenQ has gotten to a laptop that could hold its own in the cutthroat US market. Typically, BenQ packs their machines with such middling components/technology -and wraps them in such ho-hum packages- that they'd be eaten alive, but the S41 is actually decently spec'ed -and a pretty sexy design to boot. In China, it can be had after discounting for between $1200-1300 for the typical configuration (C2D 7100, 512MB-1GB, 120GB, Ge8600M, Vista Home Basic). The biggest weakness I found is the lid: it's very easy to ripple the screen with pressure from the backside. Otherwise everything seemed pretty solid.

Sorry, short of a vacation in one of BenQ's markets, I don't know how you'd go about getting one.

yes, it's hard to find Benq notebooks in US. As i know, there are many benq notebooks in South east asia region(malaysia, spore, indonesia) and many european countries.

You can find them via dealers on Malaysian sites like www.lowyat.net. I've been looking for one myself and got a very good quote for a 2gb configuration with no OS but shipping included, but haven't ordered yet. Last word was that they'd been delayed. Drop a post or private message to john_jay2 here on the S41 thread: http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/436243

Also, check out the specs for the newly-announced Dell Inspiron 1420 for a somewhat silmilar config stateside:

One of the things drawing me to the S41 is their good speakers since I don't tend to use earphones and external speakers on my laptops and want good sound quality. However, the speakers on my current Dell Inspiron E1505 are actually pretty good for laptop speakers (no tinny quality to the sound), so i expect the 1420 to sound about the same. Good luck!

I just order 1 unit from retailler and will arrive to me 3 July 2007. It cost around 1080 USD in my country (Thailand). Standard configuration without any OS. :)

Is it possible to get the BenQ in mainland China, or is it's market limited to Malay?
