I was woundering what you guys will use for your OS. The big reason why I bought the HEL80 was the fact it had an nvidia card, which has great drivers under linux!

I've been considering Gentoo on mine, but not a lot of people know how to install it and I dont want to write a big monster how-to guide :p. Maybe something like fedora core, or mandriva. Of course I'll have my backtrack live cd and knoppix.

Whatever we install we gotta be sure to post what we did on linux-on-laptops.com !

Linux compatibility is an important issue for me, as well. Nvidia's Linux drivers have historically had a much better performance than ATI's, and I think a large part of that is due to better OpenGL support from the Nvidia cards overall. That's one of the main things that swayed me from the ASUS S96J to the Compal. ATI has begun picking up the pace, but they're still quite a ways off. A great resource for keeping in touch with Linux and video card information is Phoronix.com.

As for the OS, I'll be installing Ubuntu Linux, Dapper Drake (6.06 LTS) release when the Compal arrives late this week from PowerNotebooks.com. I anticipate it will go extremely smoothly, with all of the hardware "just working," excepting the built-in camera and the fingerprint scanner. I have already participated in several Ubuntu installs over the past two weeks and have to say that this is the most well put-together distribution I have seen since I began using Linux as my OS three years ago, and my recommended distro for newbies and veterans alike.

I've been told that Ubuntu now supports the X1600 with Dapper Drake.

Im using Dapper Drake right now it's really nice. It's worth a try.

Any modern Linux distro will have the non-accelerated, free (as in speech and beer) X.org/XFree86 drivers. I was referring, though, to the performance of the binary, proprietary, non-free, 3D-accelerated drivers available from ATI and Nvidia (which are free as in beer, but not as in speech). In this respect, Nvidia has the advantage, currently.
