What temp do you have for your 3870x2 while doing 3D?
use ATITool to scan for artifacts.
Vista64.
what program do you use to monitor your GPU?
Thx for the help.
-
-
use Hwmonitor Pro.. I pointed that out just a sec ago in another thread..sorry to double post.

WOW 101C for one of the GPUs. Whats up with that?
-
only 1 GPU works in windows mode.
-
101C?
You do realise that is like 16C over the safe limit, right?
There is something terribly wrong there.
WAY TOO HIGH TEMPS... -
rosewell says 90 degree is the limit.
and the fact that the bios didn't shut it down, so it should be reading error. -
An easy way to test is to put your hand on the bottom of the laptop. If its running at 101C the bottom will be hot.
-
ya think? wow.. dude, go to your ATI control panel, then scroll down to 3d settings..and make sure AI/Artifical intelligence is enabled. AI = Crossfire. Your other card isn't doing anything.. so it's likely just not turned on
-
both cards are doing things in full screen 3d. in window, only 1 card can be used. I will use my hand to touch.
-
Yes because 101C is 213.8F
Boiling point of water is 212F
Just to give you an idea. -
ok..so then adust your AI to the advanced option.. it looks like this isnt your first problem with GPUs eh? Maybe, user error? Not to offend. Just a question.
-
Double the temps from GPU1 to GPU2 that's insane! My 9800M GT's are at the most 10 degrees apart, I hope this is not a trend.
Did they get that high during gaming or just running benchmarks? -
is crossfire even enabled?
-
download GPU-Z and check if crossfire is enabled
-
guys, I am not that dumb, it's was enabled by default when AW shipped it to me.
Later I changed to Advance AI, it's same thing.
The point is not 1 gpu working and 1 gpu not working, it's just 1 of the 5+ examples I have that shows the temp goes up that high. In this example, I use ATITools, which only use 1 GPU (no matter what settings) in window mode.
Other examples are games which use both GPUs which brings both GPUs to above 100. -
has nothing to do with being dumb, but has all to do with checking every possible road and hoping that it is one of a simple one.

Trust me; no driver, no program and no software level issue (on the OS) is going to cause temperatures to reach 110 degrees C. This is a good 33 degrees ABOVE the average temperatures here. It's definitely a hardware issues and should be taken to Alienware. Don't listen to them when they tell you BS like "that's normal" or "wait for a week to see if problems persist." They're just setting you up to screw you at the end; the cards would probably be messed up after the end of that week, then you get on the phone with them to tell them what happened and the first thing they'll try to do is to convince you that the warranty doesn't cover something like that (when it actually does) or that you voided your warranty through negligence.
Trust me, take it to them ASAP. -
What are the chance that both gpus have same problem?
-
then that would be a serious indication to go ahead and send it back. since it means we haven't gotten to the real problem or any closer to solving it. and all we are doing is speculating....
-
crap, I need a computer to work with, I can't just send it back not have a computer for few weeks. What can I do?
-
Are you comfortable opening up the chassis? The cards are very easy to pull out. Oh! Do this..may be a simple solve. Remove the cover from the base.. you should have a cable connecting both GPUs..and a easy pull type tab on each end of the connectors. Remove the cable, and reseat it. Make sure they're connected properly. If the problem persists, remove the slave card, which should be labeled slave when you open it up. There's really not much to removing the cards. Have some AS5 handy, cause they may have used cheap crap on the GPUs.. Can't hurt to clean and apply new stuff. Just dont use a lot! But, if you remove the slave..then run your system with just master and check temps. Then, replace that card with the slave..and only run with slave installed.. check temps. Then put both back in but flop their original postitions. check temps. Then, maybe you can determine why it is having issues. Also, have you tried simply installing a new video driver?
-
Actually, I opened up the case before.
Why does reseating the cable help on the temperature? Anyways, I did that before as well in an attempt to remove heatsink to see if the thermal pads are in use, but I can't pull the thermal pads apart because they stick to the core already. If I really pull them apart, I need to have thermal grease ready and prepare to clean the pads, but I was not ready for that yet and don't want to void warranty.
What version do you have? -
a much newer one.. go to www.driverheavendownloads.net and get the 8.11 for your OS. You'll prolly need to run mobility modder to use it. But, that download is right there as well. Simple to use. And, it is VERY simple to remove the heatsink. I used the heat pipe, that runs between the gray plastic area, and placed a screw driver underneath to lift the one pipe..then the other. And do NOT replace the thermal pads with AS5. They are covering plastic transistors..not metal. However, in the very center of that heat sink spread is the GPU heat dissipator..and that gets AS5.
My point with the xfire cable is if it is not seated properly, then its only running off one card..or maybe the connections are causing it to have problems. Turn the cable or something. And, you asked for help..if you want me to justify every idea, then forget it. But, that's called troubleshooting.

Hey Fusion click on the Graphics hardware tb and make sure theat it says linked adapter in there.

This was taken on second day.
Sorry, just that in every reply I have to mention it's NOT that "crossfire not working", it's WORKING. Just that no matter how many times I say it's WORKING, everybody just keep on telling me to check if it's working because of the screenshot of ATITool. I do appreciate for your help.
So which part of the heat sink you are mention to put screw driver under? The one by the ram and the one by the subwoofer? -
here ya go..
By Ewrecked
side by side.. -
your driver is from july 24th..mine is october 28th..may wanna update it.
-
Also, if you take the heatsink up, can you just put it back on without fixing the pads?
Does it void warranty? -
-
the pads will stay to the heatsink. And, the pads are easy to move around if you need to. The sink is stuck on pretty good but you shouldnt hurt anything. looking at the pic..you see where the 2 pipes go their seperate ways, one to the left and one to the right.. the pipes just outside of the fins lie in a gray plastic groove..thats where you should place the screw driver under and lift the pipe, which will life the heatsinks..make sure you unscreen all 11 screws first.. in order as numbered.
-
You would probally have to check with Alienware.
All I can speak for is Mark at KN it doesnt void it with him.
The only reaso I could see it voiding it would be if you were negligent when you put it back together and broke something off.
But then again if alienware sends it to you you install some yourself so I dont see why it would. -
Ok, new driver, same sheet.
Got to call AW tonight. -
actually, 100C is really hot, but it wont shut down. Certain bioses are keyed to shut down at certain temperatures.
My friend Kate had a Asus C90S, and the 8600mGt got to well over 126C and it kept running. The system shut off when 140C was detected. (This was just WOW running too, talk about a bad cooling system)
The card was actually getting that hot. I scanned it with my thermal gun usually used for engine diagnostics.
I wouldnt go taking anything apart, or toying with your video cards.
Send the manufacturer an email and ask them if they can send you a bios which forces the fan to run at a higher rpm.
This should not be too much of a problem
If you have not done already, you may want to invest in a good laptop cooler
any laptop design with two gpu's and one fan is a big no-no. The cards always rn much hotter this way. Keep your investment running and get a good laptop cooler.
I gotta say one thing,
those 3d marks are impressive the 3870 has.
Its better than my octalsli 7950GX2 setup

the issue here is the one gpu is running, and the other isn't. If you look, it's completely idle. Do you have any programs that get it to actually function? The only reason it's temp is changing is the heat the other one is creating on the heatsink. Have you at least checked the crossfire cable? run something other than ati tool. Try furmark.
-
No, I do not need to invest in a good cooling laptop or ask for a bios to cool down the gpus more, because other owners of this same laptop and same spec do not have this problem. The cooling system is fine normally, but this one is defective, and I don't exactly why it's causing that.
The fans runs at 100% when it's over 100 degree where other owners only have fans at 30% and never go over 80. -
How do I know it's work? GPU-Z can keep log on the GPUs, HWmonitor can have Max and Min. Check my review, you can see I have done some from there.
So, one more time, the CF is NOT the issue. Yes, I have reseat cable on second day I got this notebook. The testing was the first day, and I found the heat problem in the second hour of the first day.
If you run ATITools yourself, you will find out only 1 GPU is running while in WINDOW MODE.
Thank you very much. Proof me wrong with screenshot of yours.
And thanks for pointing me to install the latest driver which I did on first day but didn't do the mod, which now I did. -
Also, another M17 owner with exact same spec did the test I ask him to do, he has 1 gpu running for ATITool as well, and NEVER go over 80.
-
Im not gonna run atitool..no need. Look, I am attempting to assist you. Either you can accept it without getting upset because Im offering an attempt to resolve, and troubleshoot.. or, you can deal with sending it off for repair.
There's nothing for me to prove. And, I apologize your new rig has issues..but, this seems as it would be easily resolved. Do you have a fullscreen game that you can run? One that pushes the temps of BOTH GPUs? Instead of just telling me that ATItool affects one card. Do the temps freak out if you are using anything OTHER than ATI? -
post a screen shot of something OTHER than Ati. That thing is bugged anyhow, especially if youve got 64bit vista. are you running Find Max Clocks? What the heck does ATI tool matter anyhow? Does your system perform normally under other conditions? You aren't providing any info.
-
I have run many full screen games, like CoD4, TF2, GW, CoH, but it's not easy to see the temp real time while running the game, the temp log shows the same on both GPU.
I am only using ATITool for find artifects to stress GPUs. -
try running your game in window mode with the temp screen up right next to it..you can monitor it best that way.
-
window mode = 1 GPU, full screen = 2 GPUs
-
not sure what you mean....
but if you usually hit alt + enter it will change your screen from full screen to window mode...use an in game resolution smaller than your true screen size. -
-
ok, so how we looking now fusion?
-
Do you see the tape still on the thermal grease?
and the cores are shinny with not thermal grease at all?
called AW, Kevin from Roswell acknowledge the issue and will call me back tomorrow for solution/compensation. -
After I remove the plastic tape between the thermal grease and the core.
Here is the result.
70 degree maximum in the screenshot.
What temp do you have for your 3870x2
