l'm considering buying the 2155 from newegg:

And while 80gb seems like a good size for me, if its 4200rpm l don't want to have to replace it with a faster one (l would prefer a 5400rpm). But my problem is l can't find the rpm listed anywhere including averatec.com.

Does anyone know what it is?

4200rpm HDD most likely. For the prce Averatec is selling these, I doubt that they would include a 5400rpm HDD.

l was scared to hear that...still a good deal for the specs.

l read that there was a issue with different brands of memory, any idea if Transcend (Samsung chips) would be ok?

They(MSI) should have an updated BIOS up to solve that issue. Transcend should work, in most cases the memory will work at slower speed than what it is rated at. Check out the MSI forums, you should be able to glean some more info on this issue.

It includes a 5400 rpm Western Digital scorpio 80Gig. Some people have complained they die -- I've also read this regarding some of the newer Sony's.

Needless to say, mine was fine -- I ended up selling it and installing a 7200 rpm IBM 80Gig. Works even better, almost same battery life and heat.

Memory issue is mainly that you can't really run at 400MHz. If try, it might work, but it might crash. The bios update mainly lets you run the 400Mhz memory at 333MHz. I just installed Kingston pc2700 memory, and it runs just fine at 333MHz.

It's actually a rather nice unit for the price -- remember it's really an MSI 1013 (S270). It has an ATI GPU (200), so it will play games (at lower res). It plays Star Wars Empire at war just fine. It has a metal alloy case so it feels solid. It has a nice bright screen with no missing pixels -- would work great indoors and out. If you run Linux it runs great -- video and sound drivers exist. Only downside -- It's battery life kinda sucks... and it seems to have some bios quirkyness (cooling fan gets stuck on even when it's cool). Touchpad is a little touchy.

Overall, it's worth the price. I'd buy it again.
