    third. :)

powernotebooks.com has great service and answered all my questions. And no voice mail menuing system. Real people answer the phone and know what they are talking about. An anomaly these days.

Powernotebooks. Donald is great. He answered my questions honestly with no expectations of a sale, and never tried to up-sell any features or configuration settings. The few times I've contacted them after-sale, they've been very prompt and responsive--and then contacted me later to follow up and make sure it was settled. Now that's service.

Just made an order for a HEL 80 at milestonepc.com today, went in person. they had both the hgl 30, hel 80, as well as many other brands out and running. ad not locked down like at a big box store. so you could try using it at a desk, in your lap, in one of their comfy sofa's. hopefully I won't have to find out how good their after purchase sales is.

    Hi all!
Been lurking and reading these forums for a little while now and through a lot of research I've decided to buy this from MilestonePC.

    Compal HEL80 Core Duo T2400, 15.4", WSXGA+, 1680x1050, GeForce Go 7600 256MB, 100G 5400rpm HD, DVDRW, DDR2 667 2x512M, 1.3M Camera, wireless abg, 9-cell battery, 3 year warranty.

The processer was upgraded to the T5500 cause that's the only one that fit into the budget...lol.

With all the research done, it seems that this one is the best bang for the buck. The Dell 6400 inspiron was the other choice at a $100.00 cheaper but the only advantage was a faster processor.

I plan on using this for light to medium gaming so the faster graphics card was one of the deciding factors. With a budget of around $1500CAN there wasn't too many choices.

xoticpc.com and I believe discountlaptops will ship to Canada. I think there's at least one more reseller up there though--but they may only have the VBI versions.

From what I saw, most of the laptops at milestonepc are pretty much equal, or higher than competing prices: however, the compals were pretty cheap.

PowerNotebooks, one of the best in my humble opinion. Just asked them a question about dual screening today, and got a reply back, less then 1-2hrs later. My next laptop, which will probably be in my sophomore or senior year, will definitely be from them, i don't even need to think twice about it, they impressed me that much.

Yes, that's one of the resellers I was thinking of. I believe there are some other local shops in Canada that carry the Compals as well though.

The only two stores I've found so far in Canada are Milestone and NCIX; for the same configuration (T2400, 100 gig 5400rpm HD, 2 gigs RAM) Milestone beats NCIX by almost $70.

On a side note, NCIX charges $50 more for a 5400rpm over the same size/model 7200rpm. Does this make sense to anybody? I thought the 7200 was faster and therefore better??

Look at XOTICPC.com... talk to Justin.... just placed my order, my opinion great pricing, down to earth service and so far great service. Of course, time will tell when and if I have any issues with the system.

So are great company and folks to deal with.

When you add in the XP Pro that comes on the LD model, only about $10 plus the difference between the T2400 and T2050 more. Some people might be willing to pay that to buy hands-on instead of online.

the only thing for us canadians buying laptops in the states is the duty!! beware canadians, it may look like a deal until the government gets their hands on you and the machine comes to your door costing 500 more than you expected :)

That's what stopped me from buying from the US. Not only the duty but the $ exchange is something else to factor in.

So after looking around MilestonePC was the place mine was bought. Should be here tomorrow too :)

BTW... We're just across the water from ya rds :)

I guess so. If I buy from NCIX I don't have to pay as much in shipping, but if I do go I pay BC sales tax and an extra $100 or so in ferries

For the one in my sig. The final total was just over $16oo. which really isn't all that bad.

Aren't those ferries a pain in the butt... LOL. You know that it's going to cost $100. to get out and back to town minimum. Then you still have to buy the things you want. No wonder the merchants here can charge more.. cause they know the hassles of getting it from somewhere else.

That's funny. We get that over here too--everything costs more because of our isolation out here. And if we buy it on our own, most companies force us to use the expensive UPS or FedEX 2-day method, thereby eliminating most or all of the savings.

I've heard from a small pocket of my family that the state they are in charges state sales tax (8%) because they feel the internet is stealing sales from the local economy.. what they fail to understand is that the local vendors don't sell hardly anything anyone wants, so people are forced to order what they want from the internet.. it's a horrible vicious cycle :D

I got my HEL80 from http://www.mtwolfcomputers.com -- these guys are great I have purchased 4 compal units from them over the past 6 years and I have been happy with each and every one - After dealing with a dealer instead of the big guys I can tell you that is the way to go as far as I am concerned -If you have a problem you can talk one on one with a tech or your account mgr-- anyone thinking of Dell or HP and the like - check out dealers in your area or on line you will get better service and be treated like a person instead of a number. Compal units are the best

My state is considering doing the same. It's horrible. They just don't know how to stay within budget and keep squeezing more and more out of us. They just raised the GE tax on us to help them pay for the worst idea ever in the history of our state (in my opinion of course).
