I see that the Compal VBI EL-80 has a 3-year warranty, and so I was wondering who carries it? Does the reseller carry it, or do I have to send it into Compal?

Suppose I just bought the Compal VBI HEL-80 barebones, and decided to buy the other parts (like CPU, RAM, HDD, etc.) somewhere else, who would then carry the warranty, and would it still be a 3-year warranty, or some other length?

I believe the VBI warranty is an Intel warranty. Also, if you go the barebones route--you will have seperate warranties for each item you buy. Neither Intel nor the reseller you bought the barebones will cover parts you bought from someone else.

Unfortunately that's one of the disadvantages of assembling your own system.

The VBI version is the EL80, not the HEL80. It carries a 2 year warranty, not a 3 year warranty on the shell. You would have to go through your vendor for warranty service, not Intel directly. You would then go through each manufacturer and/or vendor for the individual components.

What? Under my notebook it says "Model: EL80". Nevertheless, I have the same specs and looks as non-VBI.

Not to worry, the VBI intervention on this model has caused much confusion. Don't worry about what it says on the bottom of your computer, just look at the beautiful brushed aluminum and know that yours is NOT the VBI version :)

Hi i just bought the VBI hel-80 and i think the difference is that the hel-80 has a Nvidea 7600 and a finger Reader and the el-80 has a intel intergraded video with out a fingerreader and for my point of view i think that it is better to have separated warranty just because if one part gets damaged you can replace it with one you all ready have and send the part thats damaged to your manufacturer. so you dont need to send notebook just that part

The one with the integrated GPU is the HEL81 I believe. Here are the differences between VBI and non-VBI from what I have gathered.

Your approach to the warranty is slightly flawed as well. If it is only a component that has failed most vendors, including PowerNotebooks.com, will simply cross ship you that component. You would not have to send the entire laptop in for warranty repair.

That little bit right there is a HUGE driving force for people considering buying from powernotebooks! :D

I hate when something goes out and dell wants the whole system for upto 2 weeks. They dont even want to hear that you have been fixing machines professionally for years and have all the certs known to man..

It really is a nice advantage to have a comprehensive warranty over the entire system rather than a number of seperate ones. It just gives you better protection against any failures and simplifies the whole process.

And to me, it's just one of a few good reasons to go with a trusted reseller.
