It's because they add it in for you. Instead of you buying it and having to open up the computer and finally add it, they will do everything. It's basically a service charge.

And aleviates worries about damaging your processor and thus voiding its warranty from manually opening up the notebook.

    At a 1000% mark-up?

They need to apply a standard paste anyway, unless it's already included on the heatsink. It just makes me wonder why it's marked up so much. Maybe it is a time consuming process, but I can't see it being. But it also makes me wonder what else is being marked up that much, and it ones of the reasons I haven't bought from either of those places mentioned yet.

who8mahrice - it's not rocket science. They are made as a barebones unit, everything is easily accessible.

It is not a matter of mark-up.

Unfortunately for some reason our technicians insist on getting paid. The process involves stopping the assembly process and removing the standard wax based thermal pad, cleaning both the heatsink and processor, and properly applying the Arctic Silver 5.

Now if you were smart, you would notice the headline on our homepage that says: CALL US for Special Promotions on PowerPro and Crown Models. Thousands have and didn't regret it :D

Quick question guys. If I replace the stock paste with AS5 myself, do I put the AS5 on both the CPU and GPU?

I know for desktop PC's it requires Ceramic paste for the GPU generally.

Don't know where you got your info on desktop pastes, but you can use AS5 in both cases. Ceramic paste is non-conductive, where AS5 is partially conductive (I believe), so you have to be very careful in the application of either. But you should be able to use AS5 on both the GPU and CPU, in your notebook and your desktop.

Its best not to use a silver based TIM on the GPU as if it gets onto the RAM Chips it can effect them. However i used silver based on my desktop GPU and it runs fine authough i didnt get any on my RAM!!!

Exactly. Silver based thermal paste WILL cause shorts if it connects traces. It can happen on CPU's as well, anywhere you have electrical connections where it can touch.

What is the point of the silver paste anyway? Is it worth it? (I have no idea what benefit it provides.) I assume that since most computers don't have it it isn't a big deal.
