Well, I've been spending the last few hours trying to get the drivers installed. and finding that 64 bit is causing all sorts of issues. I found compals site seemed to have 64 bit pro drivers, however the cd image was the same as the one I had (only the 32 bit drivers). and all the drivers for 64 bit, I have to download individualy, if they work at all. Also, after finaly getting the video drivers to work, it said something about not being able to load due to flserver running. Any help such as where to find the 64 bit drivers would be greatly appreciated.

Driver support for Windows XP x64 is generally very poor. There have been others who have been uanble to locate the proper (or working for that matter) drivers as well. With Vista about to be released, it may never get the attention needed to fill in the gaps.

It remains to be seen whether Vista will get it either.

Hopefully it does. But I'm sticking with XP for a while unless something comes up that forces me to convert sooner.

By the time I'm ready for a new system, I hope it's all squared away.

x64 has been a dude since it was released due to not only driver issues, but even if you do get it all installed, unless you are using all 64-bit software applications you will get application errors left and right.

It will be best to ignore 64-bit until it has had an opportunity to mature, including replacing all of your software with 64-bit versions...and the wise will wait for at least the first or second revision to get the bugs out.

Biz Com's site has EVERY x64 driver you need

    http://www.bizcom-us.com/support/TechSupportDriversDownloadPage.htm#EL80

The only issues I've had are these:
-No software for finger print reader. It does install the driver though.
-The 'browse for folder' pop-up some application use will not display correctly. To get around it, I just type the path in.

Other than that I haven't had any problems.

Ah, thanks brianj. I decided to throw winxp 32 on my second OS partition, instead of saving it for linux. Installing the drivers went much smoother. when I feel like stressing myself out, I'll work more on getting winxp64 running properly... now to try out a little CS:S :)

Also, make sure you do the Intel .INF installation first. It found a lot that way.

And - lots of people don't get this - but Windows X64 is almost identical in code to Windows 2003 Server x64. Therefore, they use the same service packs. If you try loading the x32 sp, it'll screw stuff up.

I'm not sure it's really worth running it. I don't have any 64 bit applications that will benefit from it. The core OS stuff is 64 bit. I haven't noticed any performance lost, nor have I had trouble with any applications...

My HGL30 just arrived today! Luckily for me, as an IU student I got a copy of Win XP for $10. Unfortunately, it comes with both the standard and x64 editions and I'm not 100% sure which to install.

From what I can tell, the Core 2 Duo processor in my machine is compatible with the x64 edition, but I don't know if it's worth installing.

    Any advice?

You won't benfit from 64-bit as their are no 64-bit programs that are available on the consumer market just yet. I would just install the normal Windows XP. Also, getting drivers for the Windows XP-64 version may be harder.

Like he said, XP64 has no use. It's a failure.

While your machine is indeed compatible with x64 edition, I would agree with the above posters that you should install the regular 32-bit edition. x64 was released by M$ as part of a process made to AMD and wasn't really developed properly. Vista will offer better 64 bit support as M$ has stated that they will require 64bit drivers for all hardware that wants to be M$ supported.

Summary: wait for Vista for 64 bit, install 32 bit now.

Oops. In my excitement I didn't even notice that there's already a thread about the 64 bit version on the first page here. Sorry about that.

hmm, took another stab at installing xp 64 (tried vista, till I noticed it wanted 12 gig to install, this was after I formated my c:, 5gig with xp64, which also had the boot.ini) but I can't get the wireless to go, tried its own installer, tried installing by manualy pointing it to the ini, but no goes. also couldn't get any of laptopvideo2go's x64 drivers to work, though bizcom's did. oh well. on the plus side my home made stand for my lcd to make it portrait worked out. though it does lean over about an inch at the top compared to the bottom, I'll have to try and fix that when I also make it sturdy enough I feel I can trust it. (two size 6 screws in a tube make me a lil nervous).
