Does your wireless turn off when your lid is closed? In the power options I have set to 'do nothing' when the lid is closed. As soon as I open the lid it comes right back, but obviously it's completely unacceptable to have it turn off when the lid is closed.

Is this happening to anyone else?

My wireless light turns off when I close the lid, it also reconnects instantly. I dont see why it is unacceptable since you can't utilize it while the lid is closed anyways. The trigger on laptop (when you close the lid) could kill the lights but not disable the connection, and if it is instantly connected when you open it I dont really see the issue. The only other thing you can do is check the power options for that device. Start>right click 'My Computer'>properties>hardware>device manager>+ Network Adapters>right click "on your network adapter">properties - from there you can check the advanced options / power for that device. What is the make/model of your lappy?

my laptop often sits downloading whilst the screen is down, thats why its important that it stays connected to the wireless network!

I guess you've never downloaded anything!

I checked out the options in there and changed Power Managment to highest performance (as opposed to max battery life). No effect. This is the Compal HEL80 with the internal intel wireless card.

    No.

Well, thats a new one on me.... Mine stays connected while I've got it closed. I've got several notebooks and pedestals at a large L shape desk. The notebooks are on trays that slide in and out, requiring the notebook closes.

I think you have many "serious" issues and need to get a refund. You seem to have nothing but complaints for your system and how it is behaving. Whether or not they are truly problems with the hardware or just your dislike of it all, why put yourself through so much frustration?

try this: when you have intel wireless open, go to profiles->manage profiles->choose wireless network/profile you are using->click properties-> click advanced at bottom left of window->click on maintain connection-> check the maintain connection when logged off option. i know that you're not logging off but simply closing the lid, but it couldnt hurt to try.

    I am on a 10mb/1mb connection - I dont wait long for downloads. . .

Your sure you have your laptop set to stay on when the lid is closed? Hibernate disabled / System Standby to never, turn off hard drive to never (Power options)?

The ends of the wireless antennas are in the top of the screen in the HEL 80. If your connection is tenuous to start with, perhaps the change in position is enough to disconnect you.

You sure you don't want to return your system? I think your system is flawed and you should get your reseller involved to fix the issue.
