Hi all, and thanks for your attention...
Basically a day ago, while listening to a music cd, an error came up "the disc cannot be read", and the dvd-drive TSST corp SN-S082H, simply disappeared from My Computer. After rebooting the icon was there, but something went wrong...
The only thing working with the drive, was the eject option when right-mouse clicking on the DVD icon in My Computer, and just the light flashing on the actual DVD...
The problem: when inserting CD's nothing happens...When i try DVD-s the drive makes strange noises...
So far tried:
1.Uninstalling from Device Manager, and rebooting...Doesn't help...
2.Updating the device drives from ftp.zepto.dk/Optical_Drives/Firmware/Samsung_(TSST_Corp)/SN-S082H/... Didn't help... (
Does anyone know if there is something that can be done? Or is the drive just basically dead, and needs replacement?
Thanks in advance for helping out!!!

Try uninstalling the IDE channel which has the current transfer rate of UDMA2, then redetect the hardware. This can flush out some problems.
If that doesn't work, see this or similar advice regarding the Upper and Lower Filters.

Thanks for the reply...
I tried to do both, deleted all ide from the device manager, rebooted, -->drivers got reinstalled, did not work...
I also looked at the second solution, found the exact string in the regedit.exe, however the filters were missing...
So i guess the drive is basically dead? -

The next test would be to try to boot (Windows installation or Live Linux) off the optical drive (you may need to check the boot order in the BIOS, but pressing a Fn key (F12?) at the BIOS splash screen should bring up a boot device menu. If the optical drive is not on that list then the BIOS can't see it.
Do you have access to another notebook so that you could swap the optical drives? That would be the final test for a dead drive.
