I just ordered a Znote 3415W, happy with the speccs and many seem to be happy with their Znote's aswell, but there is a question I have.
What OS'es can be used on it really? Ubuntu? Or is it only Vista?
I'm aware that officialy the 3415W don't work with XP, I can accept that, but I want to know why it won't work and what don't work if anyone can answer those questions.
Any recommended OS'es for the 3415W? (I've got a few copies of Vista Buisness laying around thanks to my fathers work so in "worst case" I'll go with that, else I'd stick to XP)

well most linuxes will work without any fuss on it. when i say work i actually mean start here is a guide to get all/most things on a 3415W working on ubuntu (most of these things is usable in other distros as well) Zepto 3415W Linux Guide also without slipstreaming the sata controller drivers onto the xp disk you cant install XP since it cant find the harddrives

Thanks for the reply, though I have a question, slipstreming drivers unto the XP disc? How? (I'll check wikipedia of course) but if you can do a quick explenation of this I'm glad

Choose OS and then you can start to download the drivers you need. The 3415 is also known as compal fl90, and the drivers for the fl90 works on the 3415. 3415 supports XP but Zepto doesnt have its own drivers. Sorry for my english, need sleep.

Well our desicion to not support XP on the 3214/3414/3215/3415W are that when we got the first batch of machines there where not a full driver set that was WHQL for XP for the model. This has later been updated by Compal, but there are still one application for the machines that is not supported in XP and that is the webcam application. This alone is enough for us not to support XP as we would get loads of calls about how to get the webcam working properly.

Thanks alot for the replies, now if anyone could point me to a "for dummies" guide for slipstreaming the SATA drivers into the XP disc I'll be even happier (I'm under the impression that even if you use the Compal drivers you'll need to slipstream a XP disc with SATA drivers)

See nLite for slipstreaming.
Just follow the procedure.

I think I now can use nLite properly, but there is one thing I still need, that's the sata controller drivers, I haven't found them, anyone mind lending me a hand?
Oh and, do the IFL90 drivers for the FL90 aswell or are there seperate? Because I haven't found any FL90 specific, only IFL90. -

I think you have the Intel chipset, so go to Intel: SATA and Matrix Storage.
It's also a good idea to download and slipstream the major XP patches and updates. Then there's less updating to do later.

Doh, a problem the SATA drivers are in .exe format, is it even possible to slipstream in that into a XP disc?
and it's not exact able with WinRAR :\
EDIT 2: It's the Matrix Storage drivers that are in a .exe, but I doubt that I'm going to use RAID so I guess I don't really need it?
EDIT 3: Is the IFL 90 drivers the same as FL 90 drivers? Because there are no FL 90 drivers pointed out@compals site -

Look for a floppy configuration utility under the Intel drivers. That will make a set of driver files which you can use for slipstreaming.

EDIT: Would this be it? And if so, how the heck do I use this?

I'm sure I've used those Intel drivers previously, but they don't want to cooperate at the moment.
Here's a different approach: Create the folders suggested and drop the appropriate drivers into each and then let nLite include them.
John -
Oh and, sorry If I'm asking many questions, but it's better to be safe then sorry
EDIT 2: I've got to say, I do not have a XP SP2 CD, only a SP1 so I'll be slipstreaming a upgraded SP2 disc aswell.
EDIT 3: Time for a stupid question, what's the root folder of WinXP? -
John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
For the driver problem, see this other thread which has a similar problem. Maybe you can use the answers. Yes, you need to add in the SATA drivers for XP SP1.
The root directory is, in Unix terminology "." which means as high as you can go up the hierarchy. It is the base place, such as C:\. So root on a CD means not in any folder, just sitting at the top level.

and if you look at that "alternative" way you'll see it's a 2 part driver, something I don't have, so I have no clue what I should do now nor do the drivers I installed have a .inf file I can point nLite to -
Update: I've now made a XP SP2 CD, what *should* I do next? As in, what driver do I put where or procced with next, because the SATA driver I seem to have downloaded ain't the right thing and I do not know how to correctly apply it to this newmade XP SP2 CD.

OK, another route: Get the Intel chipset driver from Zepto (this is for different model but same 965 chipset). All the drivers seem to be in the folder "All", but I expect nLite can figure that out.
Then you should use nLite to slipstream these into your CD. If you have AHCI enabled in the BIOS then you will need some other drivers as discussed here.
John
PS: It's for occasions like this that I keep a USB FDD in the drawer! -
Follow up question: How will this really go during the procedure? Will I need to press F6 to install a SATA/RAID driver or? -
John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
If you got the correct HDD interface drivers slipstreamed into the installation CD then there's no need for F6. The installer will see the hardware then find that the drivers are already on the CD and use them.

The installer should be clever enough to avoid the wrong drivers but it must help to leave off anything which you know is incompatible.
