I had problems installing Ubuntu once and it related to messed up partition table or something. Did you use normal install cd or alternate install? If you used normal install cd, did it happen when booting to desktop or in installing it? You should also try that "check cd for defects" when choosing on that boot list.

It seems that the problem is known: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/partman/+bug/179307

So if you know how to unmount partitions as noted above link, try to do so.

I used a normal cd install, the problem occured when I lauched the install while being on ubuntu's GUI for the installation...
I'll try re-downloading it to see if that gives anything better, i'll post back when i'll finish that (slow connection, while take a bit of time...)
Thanks for the quick replies, and happy new year! :)

I don't think that re-download helps but maybe using alternate install cd would help. If not, then I suggest you to test some other distribution like Fedora or openSUSE as I have heard them being pretty good too.

Yep, the other one is text based and that means it uses different partitioning tool which is text based compared to graphical (it was the partitioning tool which caused error). It shouldn't matter if you aren't experienced user as the text based installer is easy to use too.

EDIT: And if you don't mind to use KDE (the desktop environment) over Gnome, you could also try kubuntu, which is very good too. It's basically the same but other is Gnome and other is KDE.
