I haven't been able to find anything on this topic, either, and I'd like to know if I can use my Targus APA10US universal adapter with my HEL80. Unfortunately, the Targus Tip Compatability Engine doesn't seem to list the most recent Compal models, just the following models: N30B2, N30W, N32NC, TS30H, TS30I, TS30I3, TS30T, TS30T3, and TS30W. (Anyone know if any of those models use the same adapter as the HEL80?)

    Specs of the Targus adapter:
    INPUT: 100-230V ~ 2A 50-60Hz
    OUTPUT: 15-24V - 65W MAX

Specs of my HEL80 power adapter (model ADP-90SB BB):
    INPUT: 100-240V ~ 1.5A 50-60Hz
    OUTPUT: 19V - 4.74A

The difference in input amperage makes me worry a little, but on the other hand, these are the specs of my old Dell's adapter (model AA20031), which the Targus explicitly supports:
    INPUT: 100-240V ~ 1.5A 50-60Hz
    OUTPUT: 20V - 3.5A

So maybe it's OK after all? I'm no electrical engineer, I just write code. :)

...and right after I post that, I find something more definitive. (From Google's cache -- that page doesn't seem to exist any more.) According to the table about halfway down the page, the wattage requirement for the HEL80 and HGL30 is 90w, so my 70w Targus adapter wouldn't cut it. (The HEL81 and HGL31 require 75w.)

(Targus does make a 90w AC universal adapter, but since I don't already own one of those it's of minimal importance to me.)

You may want to check with the resellers on this. They do sell ac adapters and port replicators...and would make sure that they are selling compatible parts.

powernotebooks for example has the ac adapter for $65.

Or are you just looking for cheaper alternatives?

At this point, if I decide to get a second AC adapter (so that I can leave one at home and one at the office, the next time I get an on-site contract gig), I'll just buy it from PowerNotebooks.

I just wanted to find out if the universal adapter I already owned was suitable first (and now I know it's not).

With something as expensive as a laptop, I wouldn't want to gamble with ac adapter compatibility. I would only go with something that I know will work. I think you're making the right decision.

I bought a replacement AC adapter for my laptop about a month ago from http://www.laptopsforless.com/laptopacadapter and it works great. Is there any reason to think that a replacement AC adapter would be any worse that the manufacturers?

The EL80 is Intel's VBI model of the Compal HEL80, Power Brick, Keyboard, and other parts for the VBI EL80 will work in the HEL80. You can see the EL80 VBI on our website.
