    :)
wondering about the acer ferrari 3000

    spec :
    AMD Athlon XP-M Processor 2500 + Processor
    Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
    VIA Prosavage KN400 Chipset
    15.0" SXGA TFT
512 MB DDR SDRAM (Expandable to 2048MB)
    60 GB HDD
    4 in 1 Media Reader
    DVD Dual Drive
    Wireless LAN with 802.11g Std
    Built in Bluetooth
ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 with 128MB
    4 USB 2.0 + IrDA + IEEE 1394 + S-Video TV-Out Port

This cost US$2000 (in Jakarta, Indonesia)

Anyway, would this be a rip-off, because u'd only be buying the model ?

Should I get other brand with better spec/quality with similar price?
    (Toshiba/Fujitsu/Compaq/Hp)

Wireless 802.11g would mean that it can be used in a 802.11b hotspot?

    okiee...
    thanx again :)

well, the red coloring and ferrari logo does make this a very distinctive looking notebook computer, you'll be noticed for sure!

Those tech specs are actually superb. A 128MB standard graphics card is amazingly good, 4 in Media is great, nice size hard drive, good mobile processor and all the I/O ports you'd really need. If you have a Wi-Fi card that supports 802.11g you can use it with 802.11b hotspots yes -- these two standards are compatible.

You might be paying a little bit for the branding and styling of the notebook, but overall this is a very feature rich machine so I wouldn't say it's a rip off no -- the price is reasonable.

This machine was actually on my list, had I not gone with the ultra portable. I don't think it's a rip off by any stretch. I played with it a little bit at the CES. Beyond the specs, the red is certainly impressive!

I purchased a Acer Ferrari 3000 around the middle of December here in Canada. I have been totally impressed by its looks and performance. The construction of the laptop seem very good and the keyboard has an excellent feel to it. I do notice some warmth to the case where the harddrive is installed. Everyone that I have showed it too has been totally impressed!! I beleive I may have paid slightly higher than a plainer model would have been priced at but it is worth the extra cost just for the looks!
The only weak spot of the laptop is the built in speakers. They are okay for program use but are weak when it comes to watching a movie. The screen is excellent! The Pioneer DVD Burner works flawlessly and makes perfect backup copies of DVD Movies. Using the proper software of course! All of the internet connections....high speed wireless etc. work too their full potential!
    This is a great machine!

    hey...
thanx for all the reply :)

is it true that AMD makes the notebook noisier and warmer than P4 ?
I read some tiny complaints about these things in
    http://www.techtree.com/techtree/jsp/showstory.jsp?storyid=3613

One guy had to not use his acer 3000 during presentation using powerpoint coz it was too noisy, and another said it was kinda noisy while in use in a library.
Slyfox, other than the machine getting warm, dya notice the noise being too disturbing ?

but other than that.... i've been hearing good stuff.
might be getting this one for sure. :)

It's just dat, I love the white NEC Versa E600, which has a lower spec. Do they have a "white" NEC with higher spec ?
Anyway... it's probably just a girl thing :D
and Brian mentioned that it wud be better to get the Acer, coz of the tech support in Italy wud be better.

sloane, I didn't realize you are a "girl." That variable makes the Ferrari model a definite buy, expecially if you're single. I can't imagine how many men you'll have to bat away with that thing as they try to check out the hardware.

Anyway, yes, the AMD chipset runs warmer than most of the Intel options. As for being loud, I can't answer that, but I have a hard time believing it's that bad.
