I bought the Averatec 3225 from circuit city for $950 about 4 weeks ago and have had many problems. Some smaller problems included an inability to use partition magic with the XP-home that comes with the notebook, and the fact that the drivers for the wireless card and some other hardware don't work on other versions of windows
...but here's the real problem: Maybe a day or two after I got this notebook, I experienced a problem during startup. While it was booting up, before windows had loaded completely, a blue screen flashed and then the computer completely restarted. This would continue to happen, and the computer seemed to be stuck in a loop. However after a couple minutes of attempting it would successfully startup and run windows fine. The time it took to boot successfully varied, and it seemed to occur more often when I left the notebook off for a few hours or more. Anyway, I called customer support who naturally had never heard of the problem, and then I ran the recovery discs. After shutting down and starting up the computer a few times the problem recurred. Both times I had installed a few simple programs (winamp 2.81, firefox, trillian) but nothing that should cause problems. I ran the recovery discs a couple times, but the problem kept coming back after a while and customer support couldn't offer much help. I even did a clean install of XP-pro and had the same problem. So I'm pretty sure it wasn't a problem with the recovery discs themselves. Finally I decided to just live with the problem since I had to go to Japan for study abroad and didn't have time send it in and be without a computer. But since I've been here the problems have worsened. For the first week it had the same problem with startup, but then ran everything perfectly. Then it began to be more difficult. The notebook started taking longer to startup, and eventually began rebooting after XP had been successfully loaded. At one point I had been using trillian and firefox for at least half an hour and it spontaneously restarted, and couldn't boot successfully. I ran the recovery discs again. After reinstalling the OS and setting up my username, windows began to load... and then the notebook restarted again. Since then I've been able to boot windows after a couple tries, but there have been lots of problems with various programs. Lots of errors from symantec and internet explorer, trillian etc. often fail and have to close. I've looked around and haven't found anyone else with this problem. Mostly the AV3225 seems to work fine. Any ideas? I'm probably going to bite the bullet and send this P.O.S. back from Japan and see if the manufacturer can fix it or send me a new one.
