under the ide configurations, primary, 32bit data transfer.
why was mine disabled?
I enabled it.
seems much faster.
is this a known issue or my bad?

mine was disabled too
Here is what I have found :
32-bit Disk Access
Options : Enabled, Disabled
32-bit Disk Access is a misnomer because it doesn't really allow 32-bit access to the hard disk. What it actually does is set the IDE controller to combine two 16-bit reads from the hard disk into a single 32-bit double word transfer to the processor. This makes more efficient use of the PCI bus as fewer transactions are needed for the transfer of a particular amount of data.
However, according to a Microsoft article about Enhanced IDE operation under WinNT 4.0, 32-bit disk access can cause data corruption under WinNT in some cases. Microsoft recommends that WinNT 4.0 users disable 32-bit Disk Access.
On the other hand, Lord Mike asked someone in the know and he was told that the data corruption issue was taken very seriously at Microsoft and that it had been corrected through Service Pack 2. Although he couldn't get an official statement from Microsoft, it's probably safe enough to enable IDE HDD Block Mode if you are running WinNT, just as long as you upgrade to Service Pack 2.
If disabled, data transfers from the IDE controller to the processor will then occur only in 16-bits. This degrades performance, of course, so you should enable it if possible. Disable it only if you face the possibility of data corruption.
You can also find more information on the WinNT issue above in our Speed Demonz' guide on IDE Block Mode!
Conclusion : It is disabled by default, enable it. -
Doing a lot of graphics but nothing extremely critical so I am going for it. I thank you much for the info and time. I imagine it may be less of an issue when I put the 7200 hard drive in as it will be able to read faster (less bottleneck)?. Maybe Averatec disabled it because of the 4200 disks.

Hey nowhereatoll, remember that when you change your hard drive, your voiding your warrenty from averatec. Thats something you might wanna keep in mind

hey thanks Damnage I see the corsair for 264; must be the best price now. Corsair good? Anyone?
-
Corsair, in my opinion, is the best. Some people say OCZ, but for the money, I don't think that you can beat Corsair.
In my desktop, I use Corsair 1GB TwinX PC3200LLPT 2-2-2-5 RAM, and it's been flawless at any speed, any timing. -
The Corsair 512 sticks work fine in my 6130!
-
for enabling the 32bit data transfer, which bios version do you have? because i dont have that option to change the data transfer. is this for the 6100 series?
-
Yes this is for the 6100 series. and since an updated bios hasn't been released it should be the same. I think this is the right way to get to it, i cant check it right now b/c i am using it, so luck.
go into bios, and work you way to the primary ide channel menu (or something like that). Then choose the primary disk, and then at the bottom of the list, will be the 32 bit transfer option.
bios bomb?
