ok so I just recently got my HGL30 with the integrated camera in it so my girlfriend and I could have video chats but when I try to connect using AIM it doesn't connect. Is the camera on the HGL30 just a still picture camera or can it take video too? Also, how do you record a video if it is a video camera? thanx for the help guys.

You should be able to use the integrated camera as a webcam with AIM or any other chat client.

Regarding AIM in particular, I found a couple of articles online pointing to a Live Video patch that some users needed before AIM would function at all with
their video chat. You can download this patch from:
    http://ftp.newaol.com/aim/win95/aimrtc12.exe

Additionally, from what I have seen, AIM will not "compete" for camera priority, so you will only get a black screen if any other program is displaying/using the camera's image.

You should also ensure that your computer's firewall is not blocking the ports AIM needs. From an AIM Video Conferencing tutorial:
Windows XP internal firewall: Updating a computer running Windows XP to SP2 (Service Pack 2) may cause AIM 5.5/5.9 PC video and audio connections to fail because, by default, the firewall created by SP2 blocks UPnP communications from the Internet. If the SP2 firewall is enabled: Go to Start > Control Panel > Security Center > Manage security settings for: Windows Firewall > Exceptions tab> add or check UPnP Framework as an Exception. Select UPnP Framework and click the Edit... button. Be sure that both the TCP 2869 and UDP 1900 ports are checked and listed as 'Any' under "Scope."

If the Scope of each port is listed as 'Subnet,' click the Change scope... button, and select the 'Any computer (Including those on the Internet)' radio button. Do this for both ports, and then save the changes by clicking the OK buttons.

You may also need to work with your ISP or network router manufacturer to make sure that the ports AIM is using (TCP 2869 & UDP 1900, as listed above) are not blocked, as wireless routers and broadband modems tend to block many ports used by popular programs in an attempt to increase your security.

Now, enjoy...and be good to your girlfriend :)

Have you moved the lens cover to the right to expose the camera lens?

    Have you read the manual?

Try to disable smart watchdog as it will compete with AIM for the camera access.

I would uninstall Smart Watchdog altogether...it is a terrible utility that I wish was not even on the drivers CD.

Any application that can access video recording devices can capture from the HEL80's camera. Doesn't matter if its to take stills or to take movies..

A problem with "black video" I've noticed is related to the room being to dark and the digital camera doesn't pick up anything (Auto-exposure at its best). Sitting at my desk in my normal lighting (pretty dark) I have black video from the camera.

Does what? Takes photo's? Webchat? Video recording?

If you are unable to get your device recognized, it wont matter what application you try.

My device is recognized and I can use it... I just want something that will allow me to use it to record videos to a file.

I'd suggest doing a search in the software forum. If not, post your question there. You're more likely to get an answer that way.

I personally can't think of any because I don't use that sort of software. Good luck.
