The Notebook Review forums were hosted by TechTarget, who shut down them down on January 31, 2022. This static read-only archive was pulled by NBR forum users between January 20 and January 31, 2022, in an effort to make sure that the valuable technical information that had been posted on the forums is preserved. For current discussions, many NBR forum users moved over to NotebookTalk.net after the shutdown.

    Hi,

    I've been thinking of maybe some more heads-on place where one could expect a very quick answer or just some random chat place to relax at, despite the fact the answers usually come very quickly over here and this forum is way neat, I thought it might not hurt to start up something else - an irc channel.

    If you guys don't mind, ofcourse. No intention to 'sabotage' or the like the community here, which is like i said above a great one, just something to addon to it.

    I was thinking maybe this topic should be merged with the HEL80 Owners Lounge thread, duno tho.

    So, to make things short, I suppose there isn't much else to do than join #compal @ irc.freenode.net and idle away :)

    If for any reason I'm breaking some unwritten rules of this forum, then sorry, you're ofcourse more than welcome to delete this thread, although I'd gladly appreciate an explanation to why it has so happened.

    Regards,

    //m.

    Not sure this is a good thing for the popularity of the site. People will go to the IRC and ignore the forums, which unfortunately are funded by the ad's.

    My other concern then is that answer's wont get written down, forcing helpful netizen's to repeat their knowledge even more.

    Maybe though, if you got with some of the staff they could be convinced of an IRC's value, and then embed an IRC client into the website so they can still benefit from the banners.

    well in no way am I intending to make the forums less popular and anyway I doubt they would become so - I was suggesting irc rather as a form of place where more 'loose' conversations can take place, and where more rather offtopic things can take place - obviously still being incorporated with the forums. also like you suggested the irc channel could be made official.

    There have been a handful of requests for IRC that I can recall. The reasons pyro mentioned above are the main ones that make a forum format more helpful to those looking for information.

    In fact...there is an NBR IRC that was set up not too long ago...but I don't think anybody really took to it much.

    And as far as just chatting away...there's always the Random Thread in the Off-Topic forum. That's always an option.

    And don't worry about breaking any rules with your suggestion. You are definitely not the first to make that particular one.
