i recently purchased a barebones jhl90 and i'm trying to install vista home premium oem on it.

i first flashed my bios to the 1.10 off of compal download site. however i'm not sure if i did it correctly.

i booted up using a usb stick and into dos. i tried running the phlash16.exe but it gave me an error saying some wph file was missing..

so instead i just ran the 110.bat file and things seem to have worked, cuz in the bios settings the version says 1.10. just doesn't feel right but meh? lol

anyways, i reboot from dvd and go through the vista setup. it installs and "boots for the first time" only to hang on the "completing installation..." forever.

so i started searching around for solutions and i tried the main few:
loading the ahci drivers before install, that didn't work.

loading the driver, install vista, then swap the driver cd back in on reboot so it can re-find the drivers

loading ALL the chipset drivers off my driver dvd, that also didn't work.

if i boot up in safe mode from the hd, it stalls on crcdrive.sys.

wondering if anyone else is having so much trouble installing vista? any advice would be appreciated.

    thanks.

I wonder if you don't have a problem with the hard drive. Do you have another hard drive that you could try?

no, i don't have another hd i can try.

however i don't think that's the problem, the system came with a working distributor's version of home premium oem, and everything was working fine.

blame my anal retentiveness cuz i didn't want their logo, branding and messaging plastered all over my windows and opted to do a fresh install.

Ok. And are there any signs of activity when it hangs? Like hdd thrashing or anything?

the hd activity is pretty bustling at the beginning, it looks like it's loading the proper drivers etc..

but right after it installs what i assume is the video driver (screen flickers, goes black and then readjusts itself) the hd activity goes null and it just sits on that screen for hours.

i left it overnight, and after hours and hours it goes to a black screen with the mouse cursor in the middle.

on other forums, ppl have the same problem and i'm 90% sure vista can't find the proper drivers and subsequently just ends up twiddling it's thumbs.

if it IS the sata AHCI issue that i think it is, i guess i could just settle with ATA mode instead. problem is with the 1.10 bios i don't even have the option to change my drive settings.

thanks for taking the time to help me man.

Did the installation succeed when you switched the mode? But I doubt it's the cause because without those drivers it wouldn't even be able to see the drive at the start of the installation.

AHCI enable and install Vista, but make sure it's the version with SP1 included on the CD.
If this isn't then your problem can only be solved by using an SP1 Vista Media Disc.
There is no options to disable the AHCI mode trough the BIOS, this must be doen trough the DOS mode, which can be started when you boot from USB or CD.
Then you need the files to enable/disable the AHCI mode, which can be found on the vendor or dealer which deleiverd the notebook.

okay, i'm trying the above solution of disabling AHCI via dos.

this is going to sound stupid, but if i boot from usb stick, run the AHCI disable and then reboot to DVD, will it still be disabled?
