Are you trying to play a retail DVD movie, or a DVD that was burned? If you're playing a burned DVD, it's possibly that your drive can't recognize the difference between + and - media. If you're trying to play a retail purchased DVD movie, it's possible that the DVD is not a Region 1 disc or a disc in the same region setting as your drive.
If this disc is burned, I don't think I can help you there, maybe a firmware upgrade may fix the problem, try contacting Averatec.
If the disc a DVD Movie and is a Region 1 DVD, make sure your drive matches the DVD Region in the Device Manager. It can be changed there, but after 4-5 changes the last setting is locked and you can no longer make anymore changes. You can also download software that will bypass the Region code and allow you to play a non-matching Region coded DVD. Do a search in google for DVD Region Free and you'll find a bunch of utilities to help you.
