go to a store (Best Buy, Circut City, whatever) and look at matte and glossy screens and decide which you like best (matte or glossy).

Just a thought, not really a very effective way to determine anything as going thru your screen will alter it beyound being usefull. If you dont have a good idea of the difference is between Gloss and Matte go to a retailer near you and look. Much better than a low resolution picture over the net.

from what i've seen i seem to prefere glossy, but everybody praises the quality of compal's matte screen; also, living in a small town in Romania doesn't give me a lot of options when it comes to comparing laptop screens side by side

glossy will give you more vibrant colors and better contrast, but it reflects a lot of light. if you're using the laptop in a bright environment, you may want to consider a matte screen, but it's really a personal choice. whichever you feel more comfortable with.

Laptop's generally can't be used outside if that's what you're considering. The screen isn't bright enough to compete with the sun and the result is a very low contrast, washed out screen.

Personally, I've been to Best Buy and only seen glossy-type screens. They seem to be intent on selling media center type laptops which are all the same, really.

I always hear that glossy gives the better contrast, but I'd never pick it over matte unless I was sure it would always be in a dark room. I much prefer the lack of reflection coming from matte, and, at least on my desktop monitor, the colors are eyepopping-good, in spite of its lack of distracting reflections.

Personally, I think the quality of individual displays is far more important than glossy/matte debate. There are glossy screens that are like mirrors, and there are glossy screens that are not. Some matte screens have great colors and some do not. I'd recommend to see LCD on the model you want by yourself.

About IFL90, I only saw matte WSXGA+. Aside from it being grainy, I thought it was a nice LCD overall.

Ask yourself how many good PC LCD screens are actually glossy? Not many. And from what I have seen, the Compal matte screen seems to be on par with the high end home LCD screens. Also answer this simple question:

Do you expect to use your laptop at a coffee shop, park, or anywhere else in public where the light isn't ideal? If your answer is yes to this then you will most certainly want a matte screen. The reflection off of glossy screens is unbearable in many scenarios where you can't control the light.

Hope this helps! I just wish Compal made a 1440 res IFL90 with a matte screen and a 9-cell battery. I just think this res would help the graphics card last a bit longer down the road when all the new games come out (1600 res will be too high for good FPS).
