the other day, i plugged my compal el80 into the power adapter, when doing so a spark flew out the back of the DC power jack... all power went dead, and now i cant get any power at all from the battery, or the jack.. i was wondering if anynoe with more experience with the laptop on a component level would know what sort of damage a power surge through the DC power jack would do, will a fried power jack in this model also prevent power from the battery? i believe it happens in some laptops, but im not sure if itll happen with this one.. the motherboard itself looks fine and undamaged, and the only thing that smells like burnt circuit board is the inside of the DC power jack... will i need to replace or have my motherboard refurbished? or is there a fair chance the DC power jack is at fault for the entirely dead notebook?... dont just guess at this, im asking people who know this notebook, or notebooks in general on a component level, and not someone just taking a random guess at this.

If only the power jack circuit had fried the battey should still be able to power it alone, but the fact that it doesn't even turn on anymore makes me think that the whole power circuit fried... You'll need to have your motherboard replaced.

Too bad. Have you tried contacting compal directly? I've looked everywhere but couldn't find anybody selling parts for the el80... What you could do is try to get a ifl90 or jfl92 barebone and transplant your ram and hard drive there. You could get the cpu from ebay as merom-class cpus are not too expensive on there.

id be able to transplant my CPU into an jfl92 as well.. its just i dont plan on paying $600 to resolve this issue, so im either going to have the motherboard refurbished, or i will build a new desktop of greater performance that i can find motherboards for if anything fries again
